在美國口語中可以表示學(xué)校的班級舞會。
eg:On the night of the prom the seniors were on a cloud. 舉行學(xué)生舞會的晚上,四年級學(xué)生都興高采列。
2.invite
invite sb to some place邀請某人去...
eg:Jake invites me to his house this Friday.
invite還有名詞性質(zhì),解釋為“邀請函”。
eg:He has got an invite to the fashion show.
invite還有招致,引起的意思。
His carelessness invited this bad result.
3.go with
a.伴隨
Happiness doesn't necessarily go with money.
b.與...相配
Do you think this hat would go with my new dress?
c.與...約會
He goes with the girl every week.
學(xué)生們在星期六晚上要去參加一個舞會。
[誤] The students are going to a dance party on Saturday night.
[正] The students are going to a dance on Saturday night.
Notice:舞會應(yīng)該說dancing party,不要說dance party,但一般只說dance也就夠了。
開舞會就說give a dance,
去參加舞會就說go to a dance。
那旅館每晚舉行舞會:At the hotel dances are held nightly.
我第一次遇見她是在一個舞會上:She and I first met at a dance.
他們請我參加舞會:They asked me to a dance.
規(guī)模較大的舞會,英語又可說ball,是從拉丁文來的。
