畢竟是知名公司，規(guī)章制度很嚴(yán)格，對員工的要求也很高。Catherine雖然很用功，但還是難免有不盡人意而受屈挨罵之時，這天，她因為工作上的小差錯遭到一個同事的當(dāng)場奚落，心里非常難過，甚至萌發(fā)了辭職的念頭。好朋友Jane勸她說：You have to roll with the punches if you want to survive in this business.凱瑟琳聽后心想：”在打孔機上滾動？與打孔機打交道？莫非這是一門業(yè)內(nèi)技術(shù)？“她把想法說出來后，弄得Jane哭笑不得。

Catherine: I have to roll with the punches? But I haven't seen any punches in our company, what can I do?
凱瑟琳：圍著打孔機轉(zhuǎn)悠？我沒看到有什么打孔機啊，我又能做什么呢？

Tom: It's a metaphor, my dear! "Roll with the punches" means "to be able to deal with a series of difficult situations".
珍妮：親愛的，這是個比喻好不好！roll with the punches這個俚語說的是能處理一系列困難局面。

punch這個詞除了有”打孔機“的意思，還有”打擊“之意；roll意思是”滾動，來回轉(zhuǎn)悠“，roll with the punches從字面看，是說當(dāng)遭受打擊時，你得翻著身子來迎接。不難看出，這是沒辦法的辦法，既然避免不了，那挨打也得會挨呀，盡量讓疼痛減輕唄！所以，roll with the punches這個俚語的比喻義就是”逆來順受，適應(yīng)形勢以使自己獲得生存“。以后如果有朋友遇到類似難以避免的困境，你就可以安慰他說：You have to roll with the punches if you want to survive in this business.如果你想在這一行生存下去的話，你得逆來順受。
