最近公司里一個員工得到升職，而且薪水也漲了不少。同事Tom對此事頗為不解，到Catherine跟前討論這件事，因?yàn)樗J(rèn)為應(yīng)該得到升職的是自己。Catherine到覺得人家升職應(yīng)該是工作做的好吧，不過Tom對此事一臉的不屑，小聲對Catherine說：You know what, he always kisses up to our boss. 這可使Catherine大吃一驚。

Catherine: Do you mean he always kisses the boss?
凱瑟琳：你是說他總是親老板？

Tom: Oh, my, you'd better kill me! I said he always kisses up to the boss. kiss up to sb. means to try to please sb. excessively in order to get something.
珍妮：哦，老天！你還是殺了我吧。我說的是他總是kisses up to the boss，這里kiss up to sb.指的是奉承某人，拍馬屁。
He always kisses up to the boss. 他總是拍老板的馬屁。

kiss up to sb.意思是”拍某人的馬屁，巴結(jié)某人“，意思同fawn on sb.，或者叫polish the apple，幫別人擦蘋果，把蘋果擦的亮亮的，這種舉止是不是很有點(diǎn)故意獻(xiàn)殷勤的味道？所以，如果你見到某人為了得到利益而一位逢迎取巧，拍上級的馬屁，那么你就可以私下里對同事發(fā)泄一番，說This guy always kisses up to the boss.這家伙總是拍老板的馬屁。
