During his lifetime Xu Xiake visited 16 provinces leaving his footprints nearly everywhere across theland. He never blindly accepted the conclusions given by books nor did he treat authority as thesole basis for truth. As a result he found many inaccuracies in the travel notes on geographywritten by his predecessors. In order to get a detailed and truthful picture of the particular placeshe preferred to travel on foot instead of by cart or boat despite long distances and even venturedinto mountainous areas and jungles which are rarely traveled by people and full of dangers. Thepayoff for his effort was his discovery of many fantastic landscapes which attracted him to returnin different seasons and even different hours of the day to observe their kaleidoscopicspectacles.He was not only a good observer accurate patient and objective but also appliedpersistent thought to the observations he made.
