《回首當年》（The Way We Were）根據(jù)阿琴．勞倫茨的小說改編，是好萊塢出品的愛情片中少數(shù)具有濃厚政治意味的作品，也是當時具有知識分子味道影片中的代表作。背景為美國50年代美蘇冷戰(zhàn)時期，劇情描寫芭芭拉．史翠珊 （Barbra Streisand）和羅伯特．雷德福（Robert Redford）兩位男女主人公，一個是在校擔(dān)任青年政黨聯(lián)盟主席，另一個是熱衷運動和寫作的才子，他們在大學(xué)校園相識，而到相知相愛，最后卻因為彼此間個性和政治立場的差異而分手。歷經(jīng)多年后兩人再次重逢，回首往事，不勝感慨。悉尼．波拉克（Sydney Pollack）在執(zhí)導(dǎo)該片時，著重提升影片的思想性，巧妙地把時代氣氛與個人沖突加以揉合，欣賞起來也頗有回腸蕩氣之感。

影片的主題歌“往日情懷”(The Way We Were)，由配樂人馬文．漢姆利胥(Marvin Hamlisch)譜寫音樂部分，著名的夫妻檔作詞人艾倫．伯格曼(Alan Bergman)負責(zé)填詞，曾榮獲最佳原作配樂與最佳歌曲兩項金像獎，1973更勇奪年葛萊美獎年度最佳歌曲的殊榮。芭芭拉．史翠珊以吟唱的方式演繹這首除卻巫山不是云的抒情歌曲，一如電影的主題一樣充滿傷感、懷舊和無奈。在這樣的歌聲里，你的憂傷可以徹底釋放和排遣。此曲屬于她在個人演唱會上必唱的經(jīng)典金曲。
