　　漢語(yǔ)中表示“推測(cè)”的概念通過(guò)詞匯手段實(shí)現(xiàn)，如例16中“仿佛……似的”和例17中“該是……的吧”。英文中，相應(yīng)的概念均以謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞虛擬語(yǔ)氣(as though he) had swallowed和must have been planted的形式來(lái)表現(xiàn)。

　　(18)農(nóng)業(yè)搞好了，農(nóng)民能自給，五億人口就穩(wěn)定了。

　　兩種譯文句式完全相同：原文第一、二小句并列在條件狀語(yǔ)從句中，第三小句譯作了主句。英語(yǔ)中有一個(gè)表達(dá)習(xí)慣，結(jié)構(gòu)排比的語(yǔ)言單位中，一般都省略其詞語(yǔ)相同的部分。譯文a基于此，將peasants后的連系動(dòng)詞略去。這樣處理就有了問(wèn)題：第一部分If agriculture is in ...中，主語(yǔ)agriculture為第三人稱單數(shù)，其后的連系動(dòng)詞為is。根據(jù)英語(yǔ)用法，peasants后省略的也應(yīng)該是連系動(dòng)詞is，可這里作主語(yǔ)的peasants為復(fù)數(shù)，所以省略is的譯文a違背了主謂一致的原則，不符合英語(yǔ)規(guī)范。譯文b在peasants后增加與其數(shù)一致的連系動(dòng)詞are，避免了錯(cuò)誤。

　　該例與例18情況類似。譯文遵照英文主謂一致的原則，第一行復(fù)數(shù)主語(yǔ)Thoughts后跟連系動(dòng)詞Are。第三行結(jié)構(gòu)與第一、二行完全相同，但由于主語(yǔ)The fire (in a stove)是不可數(shù)單數(shù)名詞，后面的連系動(dòng)詞改為is。第四行與第三行并列且共主語(yǔ)，結(jié)構(gòu)也完全相同，主語(yǔ)The fire in a stove(漢語(yǔ)原文中已省去)連同其后的系動(dòng)詞is一同省略。
