Peter's uncle lived in the country.

彼得的叔叔住在鄉(xiāng)下。

Once Peter went to stay with him for a few weeks.

彼得有一次和他叔叔在一起住了段時(shí)間。

Whenever they went for a walk or for a drive in the car and they passed somebody, his uncle waved.

當(dāng)他們出去散步或者開(kāi)車經(jīng)過(guò)路人時(shí)，他的叔叔都會(huì)揮手。

Peter was surprised and said, Uncle George, you know everybody here.Wheredid you meet them all?

Peter很吃驚，便說(shuō)：George叔叔，你認(rèn)識(shí)這里的每一個(gè)人嗎，你在哪里認(rèn)識(shí)他們所有人的?

I don't know all these people, said his uncle.

我并不認(rèn)識(shí)這里所有的人，他叔叔說(shuō)。

Then why do you wave to them? asked Peter.

那你為什么跟他們揮手呢?彼得問(wèn)到。

Well, Peter, answered his uncle, when I wave to someone and he knows me, he ispleased.

嗯，Peter，他叔叔回答，當(dāng)我向認(rèn)識(shí)我的人招手時(shí)，他會(huì)很高興。

He continues his journey with a happier heart.

他就能懷著開(kāi)心的心繼續(xù)他的旅途。

But when I wave to someone and he doesn't know me, he is surprised and says tohimself, Who's that man? Why did he wave to me?'

但當(dāng)我向不認(rèn)識(shí)我的人揮手時(shí)，他會(huì)很吃驚并且問(wèn)自己‘那個(gè)人是誰(shuí)?為什么他向我揮手呢?

So he has something to think about during the rest of his journey,and that makes his journey seem shorter.

那樣他剩余的旅途就有事情可想，那可以是他的旅途看上去變短了。

So I made everybody happy.

所以我可以讓每一個(gè)人開(kāi)心。
