In addition to those fine engravings from Garnery,

除了卡納里這兩件精美的作品以外，

there are two other French engravings worthy of note, by some one who subsCRIbes himself "H. Durand."

另外還有兩件值得重視的法國(guó)版畫(huà)，那是一個(gè)自署為“Ｈ·杜蘭”的人的作品。

One of them, though not precisely adapted to our present purpose, nevertheless deserves mention on other accounts.

其中有一件，雖然不挺適應(yīng)我們此刻的要求，但多少還是值得一提的。

It is a quiet noon-scene among the isles of the Pacific;

那是一幅太平洋諸島中的寧?kù)o的午景；

a French whaler anchored, inshore, in a calm, and lazily taking water on board;

一艘拋了錨的法國(guó)捕鯨船，靠在風(fēng)平浪靜的岸邊，人們?cè)趹醒笱蟮厝∷洗?/p>

the loosened sails of the ship, and the long leaves of the palms in the background, both drooping together in the breezeless air.

船上那松弛的篷帆，和背景上的長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的棕櫚樹(shù)葉，都在平靜無(wú)風(fēng)的空中低垂在一起。

The effect is very fine, when considered with reference to its presenting the hardy fishermen under one of their few aspects of oriental repose.

一想到那幅畫(huà)上把那些辛勞的捕魚(yú)者的姿態(tài)，表現(xiàn)為一種東方式的恬靜，那效果可真是再好也沒(méi)有了。

The other engraving is quite a different affair:

另一幅版畫(huà)卻是完全不同的一件作品：

the ship hove-to upon the open sea, and in the very heart of the Leviathanic life, with a Right Whale alongside;

一艘停在遼闊的大海上的船，加上船邊的那條露脊鯨，表現(xiàn)出了捕鯨生活的本質(zhì)；

the vessel (in the act of cutting-in) hove over to the monster as if to a quay;

那艘船（正在剖鯨脂）正在用勁曳著那只巨獸，象在碇泊碼頭一般；

and a boat, hurriedly pushing off from this scene of activity, is about giving chase to whales in the distance.

另外那只正從這個(gè)活躍的現(xiàn)場(chǎng)急忙劃出去的小艇，正要?jiǎng)澋竭h(yuǎn)處去追擊鯨群。

The harpoons and lances lie levelled for use;

標(biāo)槍和魚(yú)槍都平放著，準(zhǔn)備隨時(shí)取用；

three oarsmen are just setting the mast in its hole;

三個(gè)槳手在把桅桿插在桅孔里；

while from a sudden roll of the sea, the little craft stands half-erect out of the water, like a rearing horse.

而突然間，海里一陣翻騰，那條小船便筆直地騰出了水面，活象一匹后腳豎起的駿馬。

From the ship, the smoke of the torments of the boiling whale is going up like the smoke over a village of smithies;

從那艘大船上，正升騰起陣陣熬煎鯨油的烏煙，直象烏煙密布在鍛冶場(chǎng)的村集上空；

and to windward, a black cloud, rising up with earnest of squalls and rains, seems to quicken the activity of the excited seamen.

在上風(fēng)的地方，隨著一陣狂風(fēng)和暴雨，涌出一片烏云，仿佛要加速那些激昂的水手的動(dòng)作似的。
