I now took the measure of the bench, and foundthat it was a foot too short; but that could bemended with a chair.

這當(dāng)兒,我把那長(zhǎng)凳估量一下,發(fā)覺還短一英尺;但是,還可以拿把椅子湊合一下。

But it was a foot too narrow, and the other bench inthe room was about four inches higher than theplaned one-so there was no yoking them.

不過(guò),橫里也窄了一英尺,房間里雖然還有一只長(zhǎng)凳,卻比這只刨過(guò)的高出四英寸模樣...這一來(lái)可無(wú)法把它們拼起來(lái)了。

I then placed the first bench lengthwise along the only clear space against the wall, leaving alittle interval between, for my back to settle down in.

and both together formed a series of small whirlwinds in the immediate vicinity of the spotwhere I had thought to spend the night.

兩股寒風(fēng)一會(huì)了師,恰好緊挨在我想過(guò)夜的地方形成一陣陣的小旋風(fēng);所以,這個(gè)主意根本就行不通。

The devil fetch that harpooneer, thought I, but stop, couldn't I steal a march on him--bolt hisdoor inside, and jump into his bed,

It seemed no bad idea but upon second thoughts I dismissed it.
