And yet Marcus Aurelius hated war.

不過馬庫斯.奧里利厄斯根本不喜歡戰(zhàn)爭。

He was a gentle, quiet man, a philosopher, who loved nothing better than reading or writing.

他是一個(gè)溫和、安靜的人，最喜歡讀書和寫書，他也是一位哲學(xué)家。

We still have the diary he kept, much of which was written during his campaigns.

Almost everything he wrote in it was about self-control and tolerance, about enduring pain and hardship, and about the silent heroism of the thinker.

They are thoughts that would have pleased the Buddha.

But Marcus Aurelius couldn't retire into the forest to meditate.

但是馬庫斯.奧里利厄斯不能退隱森林并進(jìn)行思索，

He had to wage war in the countryside near Vienna against the Germanic tribes, who were particularly restless at that time.

他必須在維也納一帶與日耳曼作戰(zhàn)，那些日耳曼人當(dāng)時(shí)特別活躍。

The Romans are said to have taken lions with them to scare off the enemy from across the Danube.

據(jù)說羅馬人甚至帶來了獅子，以便在多瑙河彼岸驅(qū)趕它們撲向敵人。

But since the Germans had never seen any lions before, they weren't frightened at all. They just killed what they thought were large dogs.

但是日耳曼人還未見過獅子，所以他們也不怕他們，他們干脆就打死這些“大狗”。

While these battles were going on, Marcus Aurelius died suddenly at his headquarters in Vindobona, in AD 180.
