Hi, I'm Anjali Rao. My guest today is the movie star Michelle Yeah. This is Talk Asia.
So, you're one of Asia's most internationally recognized actresses. How did you get where you are?
MICHELLE YEOH, ACTRESS
Well, ever since I was a little girl, I never thought that one day I would be an actress, to be honest. My big love was dance. I was a ballerina since I was four years old and I always had the... I think I always geared towards that side.
Then I went to England to study ballet. I did a degree in dance. So my parents, you know, bless them, they're very liber a in that sense. They're very traditional Chinese parents, but at the same time they always had this attitude whereby they thought that, you know, your career is what you choose. So they've always been very supportive of what I wanted to do.

You were crowned Miss Malaysia back in 1983, and the pageant world is often made out to be this hideous, sort of shallow, kind of nightmare world of, you know, sequins and feathers. What was it like for you?
MICHELLE YEOH, ACTRESS
Well, I was a little resistant, you know, to do it, and it really was my mom. And so she sort of like spoke some sense, I would say, into me and said, "You know, look, this is the only period of your life that you can do something like this, and just think of it as an experience on stage."

Did you particularly want to break into Hollywood?
MICHELLE YEOH, ACTRESS
Actually, it really was Terrance Chang, John Woo,'cause they really were the ones in my books that went out to Hollywood in, I would imagine, the early '90s, that were knocking on the door, you know, trying to make Hollywood wake up and see the talent that are [is] out here in Asia and to recognize that the Asian market is growing. And I think it was not easy for them.
There were only the elite group that watched Asian films, like the Quentin Tarantino, and at that time, you know, he was still a video guy, right? He was still a store keeper. He was taking in all these, like, fabulous things that were coming out from the East. And even for then, you know, for John Woo when he first went out, you know there was only an elite group that appreciated what he his talent. And I remember the first meeting I took, the first, always the question is, "Oh my God, you speak English!" Um, yes, I do.

So, I guess when you have a waxwork of yourself, is that how you know that you've really arrived? And it says that you are "known for roles that combine both glamour and toughness."
MICHELLE YEOH, ACTRESS
Yes!
ANJALI RAO, TALK ASIA
Do you feel like a sort of, you know, a trailblazer in a way, because you were really the first sort of, you know, butt-kicking Bond girl? AII the others just sort of, you know, stood there looking hot.
MICHELLE YEOH, ACTRESS
It was very apparent to me that, you know, there were certain molds about referring to the Asian babes that needed to be completely broken, whereby, you know, we are the Ming vases, just fragile and in the background. You know, be seen and not heard, and just... or the femme fatale, youknow prostitute from Chinatown.
ANJALI RAO, TALK ASIA
Right, Suzie Wong.
MICHELLE YEOH, ACTRESS
Yeah. You know, those images were updated, and it's necessary to show what, you know, the girls are like, the ladies are like out here. They're smart. They're independent. You know, they're tough without being-(clearing throat) the B-word. Right?
ANJALI RAO, TALK ASIA
Right.
MICHELLE YEOH, ACTRESS
And I think it's very important to realize that when women are tough, they can be very sexy as well. So when we... when they figured out that Bond girl, then they wanted her to be Asian, it was important that, you know, we communicated with, you know, the producers, Barbara Broccoli. And she's a very independent... you know she's smart and she understands what women represent.
ANJALI RAO, TALK ASIA
Right.
是的。
MICHELLE YEOH, ACTRESS
So she didn't just want like a Bond babe because if you look at this new generation-or the last two decades of the Bond girls, they've been tougher. They've been, you know, more sassy...
ANJALI RAO, TALK ASIA
Exactly. Yeah.
MICHELLE YEOH, ACTRESS
Without just being the sexual innuendos, you know without just being the girls in the bikini. They can be in a bikini looking fantastic.
ANJALI RAO, TALK ASIA

Halle Berry.
MICHELLE YEOH, ACTRESS
Yeah, exactly, but, you know, they're smart. They're what we are today.
