敵對(duì)的兩兄弟

Young Jimmy Henderson was always a bit of an optimist.

年輕的吉米·亨德森一直是一個(gè)準(zhǔn)樂(lè)觀者。

No task was too onerous for him, and even the onset of some serious illness or other-and he suffered from many during his childhood—could ever get him down.

對(duì)他來(lái)說(shuō)沒(méi)有任何工作是繁重不堪的，即使某些嚴(yán)重的疾病發(fā)作也不能使他倒下—他孩提時(shí)代就經(jīng)歷過(guò)好幾場(chǎng)惡疾。

One time, for example, he had a serious infection of his optical nerves, which almost left him blind.

Even as the pus was oozing out of his eyes, he never omitted any chance to tell a good joke or two.

That infection left his cornea quite opaque for a while, but no matter!

Jimmy was the total opposite of his younger brother Harry, who would turn out to be the biggest opponent in his life.

吉米的性格和他的弟弟哈里完全相反，哈里將會(huì)是他這一生當(dāng)中最大的對(duì)手。

Whatever it was Jimmy did, Harry would be opposed to it.

不管吉米做什么，哈里肯定會(huì)提出反對(duì)意見(jiàn)。

Their rivalry and disagreements were ongoing, and their relationship was certainly much less than optimal. Onslaught followed upon onslaught.

他們的這種敵對(duì)爭(zhēng)執(zhí)狀態(tài)一直都在進(jìn)行，當(dāng)然，他們之間的關(guān)系也決不會(huì)是最理想的兄弟關(guān)系。一次猛攻以后總會(huì)有另一次猛攻。

Whatever it was Jimmy wanted to do—whether it was going to the opera or anything else—Harry would make an opposite choice.

吉米想做的任何事情—不管是去聽(tīng)歌還是干別的—哈里總會(huì)有相反的選擇。

Many people were wondering how it was that two such opposing forces could be members of one and the same family.

很多人都覺(jué)得奇怪，這兩種如此對(duì)立的勢(shì)力怎么可能同時(shí)在一個(gè)家庭里共存？

On account of his childhood problems, Jimmy decided that we would choose a profession where he might help others with eye problems, by choosing to become either an optometrist or an optician.

鑒于童年的遭遇，吉米立志選擇一個(gè)能幫助他人解決眼睛疾患的職業(yè)，比如說(shuō)當(dāng)一個(gè)驗(yàn)光師或者是一個(gè)眼鏡商。

Either of those would be an optimum choice, he thought, but even in this matter his brother voiced his strong opposition.

在他看來(lái)，這兩種職業(yè)都是最適宜的選擇，但即使是在這個(gè)問(wèn)題上他的弟弟都提出了強(qiáng)烈的反對(duì)意見(jiàn)。
