Hello, welcome to XiaomingYingyu. Let’s start withsome slang.

So, I’m a pretty short person, but some people aretall, and you know what tall people have a lot of?

Yes, they have a lot of height.

我比較矮，但是一些人很高，你知道高的人有很多什么嗎?對(duì)的，他們有很多高度

And you might know tall also have another meaningif you really like coffee.

如果你喜歡咖啡的話，你也可能知道 tall還有另外一個(gè)意思

If you go to a fancy café, they won’t have small coffees, they have “tall” ones.

如果你去一個(gè)高檔的咖啡廳，他們不會(huì)有小咖啡，他們有高咖啡

Which means they are a little taller, they are trying to make you feel like there’s a bit more

coffee in there.

意思就是它們稍微高一些，他們?cè)谠噲D讓你覺(jué)得杯子里有更多的咖啡

So you might be able to tell where I’m going with this. Something that is tall has a lot ofsomething.

你可能知道我的意圖。高的物體有很多的東西

Tall people have a lot of height, tall coffees I guess have a lot of coffee. So what’s a tall order?

高的人有很多高度，高的咖啡我想有很多咖啡。一個(gè)tall order是什么呢?

If someone gives you something to do, you might be able to call it a tall order if it’s something

that’s a little scary,

如果有個(gè)人給你了一個(gè)人物，你覺(jué)得有些令人膽怯，你可以把它叫做一個(gè)tall order

it’s a requirement that you feel like you might not be able to do.

是一個(gè)你覺(jué)得你可能做不到的要求

For example, if you are trying to build a building, and someone asks you to finish it in a week,

you could say,

例如當(dāng)你嘗試著去建一棟樓，有人要求你在一個(gè)星期內(nèi)完成，你可以說(shuō)

“Well, finishing in time was a tall order, but we managed to do it anyway.”

So that is a tall order, a task that’s a little scary to get started on. And we can also say

that stories are tall tales, a tall tale is kind of an unusual story.

這就是一個(gè)tall order，一個(gè)比較令人膽怯的任務(wù)。我們也可以把一些故事稱作tall tale，一個(gè)不尋常的故事

There might be fairies,there might be monster bears that are two stories tall.

可能會(huì)有仙女，或者兩層樓高的熊怪

Tall tales have an element, a part that is hard to believe, because there are a lot of crazy things

in the story.

荒誕不經(jīng)的故事有個(gè)難以置信的元素，因?yàn)槔锩嬗泻芏喁偪竦氖挛?/p>

That is why they are tall tales. It’s a bit of a stretch, you don’t know if the thing in it can betrue.

So, those are two slangs, both using the word “tall”. Now let’s talk about sentence structure.

Here’s our example.

這就是兩個(gè)都用tall這個(gè)單詞的俚語(yǔ)?，F(xiàn)在讓我們來(lái)講句型。這是我們的例子

“That class only happens once a week.” “A only Bs once in this much time.”

So you could change what is happening, and you can change how often it happens.

你可以換發(fā)生的事，你也可以換它發(fā)生的頻率

But this is the easiest way to tell somebody about something that happens regularly at certain

intervals of time.

這是告訴別人某事在某個(gè)時(shí)間段的發(fā)生頻率最簡(jiǎn)單的方式

For example, “This train only runs once an hour.” The person you are talking to immediately

knows the train comes every hour, but only once.

例如這個(gè)火車每個(gè)小時(shí)只發(fā)車一次跟你說(shuō)話的那個(gè)人就立刻知道這個(gè)火車每個(gè)小時(shí)來(lái)一次

And you can also say “This bird only lays eggs once a year.” Same thing, the person you aretalking

to knows that this bird lays an egg once a year, but only once.

你也可以說(shuō)這只鳥(niǎo)每年只下一次蛋。同樣的，跟你說(shuō)話的那個(gè)人就會(huì)知道這只鳥(niǎo)每年都下蛋，但是只下一次

You can also change once into twice, three times, four times, whatever you need to fit in yoursituation.

你也可以把一次改成兩次，三次，四次，根據(jù)你的情況而定。

That is our sentence structure, now let’s talk about etymology. Today we are going to learnabout multi.

這就是我們的句型，現(xiàn)在來(lái)講詞源。今天我們來(lái)學(xué)習(xí)關(guān)于multi這個(gè)詞

Multi is interesting because it has the root multus, which in Latin means many or much.

Multi是一個(gè)有意思的詞因?yàn)樗衜ultus，拉丁語(yǔ)里是很多的意思

And you also have the Greek root mula, which means very or very much. So it’s a root that

comes from two different languages.

也有希臘語(yǔ)的詞根mula，意思是非常多。這個(gè)詞根來(lái)自兩個(gè)不同的語(yǔ)言

And you can use it in many ways. In multiple ways, it means many. One of my favourites ismulti-colour.

你可以通過(guò)很多方式去用它。我最喜歡的一個(gè)單詞是multi-colour

If you have a piece of paper or some clothes that are multi-coloured, it has many colours.

如果你有multi-colour的一張紙或者一些衣服，它有很多顏色

Then there’s multi-media. This is something you can found on the Internet, in an art gallery,on yourTV.

也有多媒體。這是一些你可以在網(wǎng)上、畫(huà)廊、或者電視上找到的

Multi-media means that it’s able to use many kinds of media such as video, music, writtenwords,photos,

texts, numbers. Multi-media.

多媒體的意思是可以用很多媒體例如視頻、音樂(lè)、單詞、照片、文字、數(shù)字。

And then of course, there’s multiple. If you say something has multiple parts, you are saying

it doesn’t just have one piece to it.

當(dāng)然，還有一個(gè)multiple。如果你說(shuō)某物有很多部分，意思是它不僅僅有一塊

There’s two, or very often, more. For example, cars, there are multiple parts that need to be in

a car if it is to run properly.

有兩個(gè)或者更多。例如車輛，在車?yán)镉泻芏嗖考?/p>

And then your favourite word using multi for those of you like math, multiplication.

Multiplication is the one that uses the x sign.

對(duì)喜歡數(shù)學(xué)的觀眾來(lái)說(shuō)，你們最喜歡的詞，multiplication，乘法

It means you are adding something together many times. For example, five times three.

意思就是把一個(gè)數(shù)加起來(lái)很多次。例如五乘以三

You are multiplying five three times, so it’s five plus five plus five. You have three fives that

you are putting together.

就是五加五加五。你把三個(gè)五放在一起。

And if you want to be fancy and say there’s a variety of things, you can say there is amultiplicity.

如果你想用一個(gè)比較高端的方式說(shuō)有很多種類的東西，你可以用multiplicity這個(gè)詞

At buffet tables you often see a multiplicity of foods. Multi, a very multi-purpose word.

在自助餐桌上你一般能看到很多種類的食物。Multi是一個(gè)多功能的單詞
