“Kingslayer,” Ned said. The rumors were true, then.He rode on dangerous ground now, he knew. “Anable and courageous man, no doubt,” he saidcarefully, “but his father is Warden of the West,Robert. In time Ser Jaime will succeed to that honor.No one man should hold both East and West.” Heleft unsaid his real concern; that the appointmentwould put half the armies of the realm into thehands of Lannisters.
"弒君者。"奈德道。這么說來，所有的謠言都屬實了。他很清楚自己此刻措辭務(wù)必小心謹慎。"他有能力，也不缺勇氣，這毋庸置疑。"他小心翼翼地說，"但是勞勃，他父親是世襲的西境守護，詹姆爵士遲早要繼承父職，東西諸國的大權(quán)不應(yīng)落入同一個人手里。"他沒把真正想說的話說出來：如此一來王國一半的兵力將會落入蘭尼斯特家族的手中。
“I will fight that battle when the enemy appears on the field,” the king said stubbornly. “At themoment, Lord Tywin looms eternal as Casterly Rock, so I doubt that Jaime will be succeedinganytime soon. Don’t vex me about this, Ned, the stone has been set.”
"等敵人出現(xiàn)了再打也不遲，"國王執(zhí)拗地說，"眼下泰溫公爵好端端地待在凱巖城，我想詹姆還不至于太快繼承職位。奈德，這事兒別跟我爭，說出去的話，覆水難收了。"
“Your Grace, may I speak frankly?”
"陛下，請恕我直言不諱。"
“I seem unable to stop you,” Robert grumbled. They rode through tall brown grasses.
"反正我也阻止不了你。"勞勃咕噥著。他們騎過棕褐長草。
“Can you trust Jaime Lannister?”
"你真信任詹姆·蘭尼斯特?"
“He is my wife’s twin, a Sworn Brother of the Kingsguard, his life and fortune and honor allbound to mine.”
"他是我老婆的孿生弟弟，又是發(fā)過誓的御林鐵衛(wèi)，他的生死榮辱都維系在我身上。"
“As they were bound to Aerys Targaryen’s,” Ned pointed out.
"當年他的生死榮辱不也全維系在伊里斯·坦格利安身上?"奈德不客氣地指出。
“Why should I mistrust him? He has done everything I have ever asked of him. His swordhelped win the throne I sit on.”
"我有什么理由不信任他?我叫他辦的事他沒有一次讓我失望，就連我現(xiàn)在的王位都是靠他的寶劍贏來的咧。"
His sword helped taint the throne you sit on, Ned thought, but he did not permit the wordsto pass his lips. “He swore a vow to protect his king’s life with his own. Then he opened thatking’s throat with a sword.”
正是他的寶劍玷污了你的王位啊，奈德心想，但沒讓自己說出口。"他發(fā)誓以性命守護國王，結(jié)果卻一劍割了國王的喉嚨。"
