When quite young, Webster did not always obey therules at school. One day the teacher caught himbreaking a rule and asked him to come forward to bepunished. In that school, striking the open handwith a ruler was the punishment. Webster's handshappened to be very dirty. On the way to theteacher's desk he hid his hands behind his back.

小韋伯斯特也有不遵守校規(guī)校紀的時候。一天，他違反校規(guī)被老師逮到。老師叫他到前面去接受懲罰。在那所學(xué)校里，懲罰就是用尺子打手掌。碰巧那天，威布斯特的手很臟，于是往講桌走時，他就把手藏在背后。

"Give me your hand," demanded the teacher.

“伸出手來。”老師說道。

Out went the right hand.

威布斯特伸出了右手。

"Webster, if you will find another hand in the schoolroom as dirty as that, I will let you go."

“韋伯斯特，要是在這個教室里找到另一只這么臟的手，我就不打你了。”

Instantly from Webster's back came the left hand. "Here is another, sir," he replied.

威布斯特馬上從背后伸出左手，回答說：“另一只在這兒呢，老師。”

"That will do," said the teacher, laughing. "You may go."

“好吧，你回去吧。”老師笑著說道。
