What do I do if I love my job, but the company is unethical?

I love my job and colleagues, but I’m not happy with the ethical and business decisions the company is taking. I believe corporate social responsibility is critical, so I’m having difficulty reconciling that. Any thoughts?

Well, is it one business decision or the firm’s practice? By that, I mean there is a difference between loving what you do day-to-day but not what your company does. For instance, you could love the job but not the industry (like tobacco). Or you can be fine with the industry but not approve of your company’s involvement with an entity or government that you don’t respect. The former is a bigger problem because no matter how much you love your job and colleagues, you will always be associated with who the company is and what it does, and it won’t ever go away. However, if you generally respect the business but not a certain decision or deal that was made, you can more easily get over that. So, what is your conscience telling you?

My boss is nice but uninspiring. He has that reputation with other executives across the company, too, and as a result, our department isn’t held in high regard. Do you think he reflects poorly on all of us in the department by extension? If so, what can be done to demonstrate that I am different from my boss without being disrespectful or undermining him?

Well, my friend, this requires a deft touch and a bit of tap-dancing. it is common for the reputation of the executive to extend to the entire department they manage, for better or for worse. The only way to be judged for who you are is to develop close direct relationships with people in the company so that you and your style stand out distinctly without casting aspersions on your boss. You can listen, but you should never be disloyal to your boss by bad-mouthing him to your colleagues. And even if your colleagues share that point of view, remain professional. You can acknowledge differences in style without being judgmental or insulting your boss. Your colleagues will respect you for that — and your boss will expect it, too.
