辨 析:
wear的基本意思是“穿”、“戴”,所以將wear well 譯成“穿得筆挺”似乎理所當(dāng)然。但是wear和中文的“穿”、“戴”還是有所不同,除了衣服鞋帽外,還可以有其他賓語(wear不能譯成“穿”、“戴”):
He sat there wearing what Terry called his "work face". 他坐在那兒,臉上一副特里稱之為“工作相”的樣子(一本正經(jīng)的樣子)。
He was probably wearing a gun. 他也許帶 / 佩帶著槍。
She usually wears her hair in a bun. 她通常將頭發(fā)綰成一個髻。
She still wore the same perfume that evening. 那天晚上,她身上仍然散發(fā)著同樣的香水味。(wear譯成“噴”、“灑”、“抹”、“搽”、“用”似乎都不好。)
Most of the people you profiled are really entrepreneurs, a title to wear proudly. 你描寫的人物大多數(shù)是實業(yè)家,這是個頗讓人感到自豪的頭銜。
She wears the slimness of her mother. 她(的身材)和她媽媽一樣苗條。(不能譯成“遺傳了她媽媽苗條的身材”。)
Nor is he a fellow who wears his faith on his sleeve. 他也不是那種讓人一眼就能看得出來有什么信念的人。
當(dāng)然wear也可以是不及物動詞,意為“磨損”或“經(jīng)久耐用”,如:The cloth won't wear.(這種布不耐磨。)原句中的wear well應(yīng)作“不顯老”、“顯得年輕”講,所以應(yīng)譯成:史密斯先生一點也不顯老/保養(yǎng)得很好。不過wear用做及物動詞也可表示此意:Mr. Smith wears his age / his years well. 當(dāng)然也可用其他句型,如:Mr. Smith doesn't look his age.(Mr. Smith looks younger than his real age. 則太直, 不是最佳選擇。)至于“史密斯先生穿得筆挺”可譯為:Mr. Smith is well dressed.
