Dear editors,
My class recently held a discussion focusing on the phenomenon of high school students listening to MP3 players.Surprisingly, only 40% agreed with it,but both sides had strong supporting reasons.
Those who agree insist that it is a fashionable trend that exhibits the outlooks of the younger generation, much in the same way that older generations listened to Walkmans. They point out that music is spiritually soothing and students can improve their English by listening to foreign language programs.
But 60% who are against MP3 players argue that it is a waste of time and money. Moreover, frequent use of it may do harm to one's hearing, which is not a price worth paying. In addition, some students compromise their study because they become hooked to music.
In my opinion,MP3 players are handy gadgets that bring benefit as well as harm, depending on how one uses it.As long as we make good use of our time and control ourselves,no harm can come out of it.Many of my peers use it to listen to educational programs, while others set aside a little time to relax so as to improve their study efficiency on the whole.Besides, most of us have the sense to turn down the volume to protect our hearing.
To sum up,as long as we keep in mind the old saying “too much of a good thing can go bad” and use our MP3 players wisely, there's nothing to worry about.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
