［注解］bully恃強(qiáng)凌弱者。指恃強(qiáng)凌弱者欺負(fù)弱小者，卻總是害怕比他強(qiáng)的人。
［譯］欺負(fù)弱小者永遠(yuǎn)是懦夫；色厲內(nèi)荏。
A clear conscience is a soft pillow.
［注解］conscience指一個(gè)人的良心，如果沒(méi)有做虧心事（a clear conscience），當(dāng)然睡覺(jué)也安穩(wěn)、踏實(shí)（a soft pillow）。
［譯］問(wèn)心無(wú)愧，高枕無(wú)憂。
A clear conscience laughs at false accusations.
［譯］純凈的良心不屑于錯(cuò)誤的指責(zé)。
A fault confessed is half redressed.
［注解］confess意為“承認(rèn)”；redress指“糾正，矯正”，意指錯(cuò)誤承認(rèn)了，一半已改掉。
［譯］知錯(cuò)能改，善莫大焉。
A fox may grow gray, but never good. (or You cannot make a crab walk straight. or The leopard cannot change its spots.
［注解］The leopard cannot change its spots. 出自《舊約·耶利米》第13章第23節(jié)。在文藝作品、普通書(shū)寫(xiě)和日常話語(yǔ)中用得很廣。

［譯］美名勝過(guò)美貌。

［注解］bestow把……贈(zèng)與，把……給予。

［譯］美譽(yù)易失不易得。

［注解］相同意思的表達(dá)還有：A guilty conscience is a thousand witnesses. A guilty conscience never feels secure. 指內(nèi)心有愧的人老是害怕，做了壞事者總會(huì)顯出心中有鬼，可譯作“做賊心虛”。
［譯］虧心者心不安。

［注解］breed“醞釀”，喻指“一失足成千古恨，再回首已百年身”。
［譯］小小的疏忽會(huì)釀成大錯(cuò)。

［注解］integrity正直，誠(chéng)實(shí)。a man of moral integrity有道德的人。slanderous造謠的，誹謗的。
［譯］人正不怕影子歪。

［譯］行為可顯示出一個(gè)人的品性。
A miss is as good as a mile.
［注解］意指小錯(cuò)大錯(cuò)皆是錯(cuò)，程度雖不相同，性質(zhì)卻是一樣。如同做一件事差一點(diǎn)未成功和徹底失敗的效果實(shí)際相同。早先的表達(dá)方式為：An inch in a miss is as good as an ell.
［譯］失之毫厘，謬之千里；毫末之錯(cuò)仍為錯(cuò)；死里逃生總是生。

［譯］“您先請(qǐng)”是禮貌。
