Dreams and Poetry
Hu Shi
It’s nothing but ordinary experience,
And ordinary pictures and visions,
That happen to arrive in a dream,
And turn to wondrous forms!
It’s nothing but ordinary sentiments,
And ordinary words and sentences,
That happen to be uttered by a poet,
And turn to wondrous verses!
Having been drunk, you’ll know the powerfulness of wine;
Having loved, you’ll know the seriousness of love:
You can never write my poems,
As I can never dream your dreams.

Dreams and Poetry
Hu Shi
All are ordinary experiences,
All are ordinary images;
By chance they surge into a dream,
Turning out many an original pattern.
All are ordinary feelings,
All are ordinary words;
By chance they encounter a poet,
Turning out many an original verse.
Only one who has been drunk knows the strength of wine:
Only one who has loved knows the power of love.
You cannot write my poems
Just as I cannot dream your dreams.

Dream and Poetry
Hu Shih
It’s all ordinary experience,
All ordinary experience.
By chance they emerge in a dream,
Turning out infinite new patterns.
It’s all ordinary feelings,
All ordinary words.
By chance they encounter a poet,
Turning out infinite new verses.
Once intoxicated, one learns the strength of wine,
Once smitten, one learns the power of love:
You cannot write my poems
Just as I cannot dream your dreams.

Dream and Poetry
Hu Shih
All is commonplace experience,
All is commonplace impression.
By chance they rush into a dream
They are transformed into many new patterns.
All is commonplace sentiment,
All is commonplace word,
By chance they meet a poet
They are transformed into many new poems.
Only after being drunk does one know the wine is strong,
Only after having loved does one know the depth of love.
You can never write my poems,
I can never dream your dreams.

Dream and Poem
Hu Shi
Experiences common to all,
Images common to all
Welling up by chance in dreams
In strange new shapes.
Common feelings,
Common words
Striking the poet by chance
In brand new verse.
Only a drunkard knows wine;
Only a lover knows love’s power.
I can no more dream your dream
Than you can write my poem.
