1. To cook the books – to record false information in the accounts of an organisation.(在一個(gè)組織的賬戶上面記錄錯(cuò)誤或者假的信息。)

例句:

When the company went bankrupt, it was discovered that one of the directors had been cooking the books for years.

公司破產(chǎn)的時(shí)候才發(fā)現(xiàn)一個(gè)董事會(huì)成員一直做假賬做了好多年。

2. To go from/get/jump out of the frying pan into the fire – to go from a bad situation to a worse one.(逃脫小難又遭大難。)

例句:

She had always had problems with her sales manager, so was relieved when he was sacked. However, she went from the frying pan nto the fire with the new sales manager!

她跟銷售經(jīng)理之間一直矛盾重重,所以當(dāng)他被解雇后她覺(jué)得如釋重負(fù)。然而,當(dāng)她遇到新的銷售經(jīng)理時(shí)她覺(jué)得自己才脫龍?zhí)队秩牖⒀ā?/p>

3. Too many cooks spoil the broth – too many people managing a job can actually create more problems.(—多反誤事。)

例句:

Look, we need to decide once and for all who is managing this project because we have a situation of too many cooks spoiling the broth at the moment.

喂,我們需要徹底地決定誰(shuí)管理這個(gè)項(xiàng)目,因?yàn)槲覀儸F(xiàn)在處于一種人多反誤事的境況。

4.To Cook Something Up – to organise something(組織事情)

例句:

Leave the organisational details of the party to me. I will cook something up and it will be fantastic. You’ll see.

5. To grill someone -to question someone without stopping(不停地質(zhì)問(wèn)某人)

例句:

The police grilled the suspect for seven hours and still couldn’t get a confession out of him.

6. To boil over – when someone cannot control their anger and start to argue or fight(當(dāng)一些人不能控制他們的憤怒從而開(kāi)始爭(zhēng)吵或是打架)

例句:

The situation was so tense in the boardroom that people’s tempers were boiling over by the end of the meeting.

會(huì)議室的氣氛如此緊張,在會(huì)議結(jié)束時(shí)大家都快要吵起來(lái)了。

7. To simmer down – to become calm(冷靜下來(lái))

例句:

Hey, simmer down and relax. Getting angry won’t change things.

嘿.冷靜下來(lái)放松一下。生氣改變不了任何事情。

8. To Simmer with rage/anger – to be filled with negative emotions like rage and anger(充滿憤怒和生氣等負(fù)面情緒)

例句:

Susan simmered with rage when she saw the mess her son made in the kitchen.

當(dāng)蘇珊看到兒子把廚房弄得一團(tuán)糟時(shí),氣不打一處來(lái)。

9. Half-baked ideas (informal) – ideas that have not been thought out enough(未經(jīng)過(guò)深思熟慮想出來(lái)的想法)

例句:

James is always coming to me with his half-baked ideas on how we can increase sales. He is so annoying.

詹姆斯總是帶著很不成熟的想法來(lái)找我說(shuō)如何增加銷售額,他真是煩人。
