9. Rough Estimates

While preparing a speech one day, Franklin Roosevelt asked his economic advisers to provide some statistics to support a particular point he wished to make. Alas, accurate figures, he was told, would take six months to produce.

In that case【1】 , I'll just use these rough estimates, FDR replied, scribbling some numbers in his notes. "They're reasonable figures and they support my point. Besides," he wryly added, "it will keep my critics busy 【2】 for at least six months trying to prove me wrong."
