Tatiana Felgenhauer, who co-hosts a popular morning show, is in hospital on a ventilator and in an induced coma, the station’s editor-in-chief Alexei Venediktov said, adding that she was in a “critical but stable” condition.
The attacker blinded a guard at the entrance to the radio station with pepper spray, then took a lift to the newsroom where he assaulted Ms Felgenhauer, the station’s deputy editor, before being overpowered by security staff.
Mr Venediktov said the man “knew where to go and he knew who he was looking for,” bypassing several other reporters before attacking Ms Felgenhauer.
Police arrested the suspect on charges of attempted murder.
Russian news agencies quoted anonymous police sources who claimed the man knew Ms Felgenhauer, and was acting on “personal motives.”
Although Ekho is owned by the state-run Russian company Gazprom Media, its liberal editorial line under Mr Venediktov has attracted considerable criticism from pro-Kremlin nationalists.
Ms Felgenhauer was the target of a state TV report two weeks ago that accused Ekho of taking funding from US-affiliated NGOs to undermine Russia by “trading in informational weapons.” The report also accused her of supporting Alexei Navalny, the opposition leader who is attempting to run against Vladimir Putin in next year’s presidential election despite being barred.
Another state TV channel recently showed a drama about US secret agents in Russia in which a liberal female journalist has her throat slit with a knife.
“In America, or wherever, people go crazy and kill John Lennon, because there’s a Beatles cult. And we have a cult of hating enemies. That’s the difference,” said Oleg Kashin, a liberal journalist who survived a violent attempt on his life in 2011.
The attack on Ms Felgenhauer is the latest in a series of assaults and threats against Russian journalists and opposition figures in recent months that have gone unsolved by police. Yulia Latynina, a longstanding presenter at Ekho Moskvy, last month said she had moved her family out of Russia after a series of attacks including an attempt to set her car on fire.
