Mr Khosrowshahi, who was appointed as Uber’s head on Tuesday and who will take up the post next week, also promised to turn round Uber’s culture, which has been plagued by allegations of sexism and harassment.
“This company has to change,” Mr Khosrowshahi told Uber staff. “What got us here is not what’s going to get us to the next level.”
In his remarks, he said Uber needed to focus on “paying the bills” — getting its business into shape, stemming its heavy losses and regaining the market share it has lost to US rival Lyft — and also on taking “the big shots”, a reference to the company’s higher-risk projects such as flying cars.
Mr Khosrowshahi’s comments at Uber’s headquarters in San Francisco mark the end of a tumultuous search process for a new chief executive for the troubled transportation company, after former chief Travis Kalanick was ousted two months ago.

However, Mr Khosrowshahi did not address the question of what role Mr Kalanick would play in the company. Mr Kalanick, who also addressed staff, expressed his support for his successor and said he would do his bidding.
While launching an IPO has been a priority for some Uber shareholders, founder Mr Kalanick was opposed to the idea, commenting in 2016 that he wanted the ride-hailing company to go public “as late as humanly possible”.
Iranian-born Mr Khosrowshahi, 48, formerly chief executive at travel group Expedia, is charged with changing a culture at Uber that has been blamed for a string of sexual harassment scandals.

In addition, Mr Khosrowshahi finds himself lonely in the C-suite — the roles of chief financial officer and chief operating officer are currently vacant, as is general counsel. He also said he planned to bring in an independent board chairman.
Expedia announced on Wednesday that Mr Khasrowshahi would remain on the company’s board, and would be succeeded as chief executive and president by Mark Okerstrom, previously Expedia’s chief financial officer.
