通常在貿(mào)易合同中都會有檢驗條款，因此出口商必須遵守合同的規(guī)定，按要求對出口商品進(jìn)行檢驗，否則則無法從議定的銀行獲取貨款。

檢驗可以分為一般檢驗和法定檢驗，可以在裝運(yùn)港進(jìn)行，也可以在抵達(dá)港進(jìn)行，由雙方協(xié)商決定。法定檢驗，指商檢機(jī)構(gòu)根據(jù)法律、法規(guī)對進(jìn)出口商品執(zhí)行強(qiáng)制性的檢驗。屬于法定檢驗的出口商品，檢驗不合格的，則不準(zhǔn)出口；屬于法定檢驗的進(jìn)口商品，未經(jīng)檢驗的，則不準(zhǔn)銷售。

A：These goods are not allowed to be imported to our country without our legal inspection. There is hard and fast rule about it in our country.

B：Then how can I arrange for the deal?

A：You can send in your samples first for our legal inspection. Once approved, the goods can be shipped to China.

B：That'll be too long a time.

A：The alternative is to ship the goods directly to the bonded area while the samples are being inspected.

B：That's terrific.

B：I'll go and arrange for the deal right now.

hard and fast rule不可通融的事情，嚴(yán)格的規(guī)定

hard和fast這兩個詞都有幾種不同的解釋，但是在這里hard的意思是“嚴(yán)格的”，而fast解釋為“固定的”。習(xí)慣用語hard and fast最初出現(xiàn)在1850年前后，用來描繪一艘擱淺的船或者在碼頭上待修的船，無論哪種情況這艘船反正是動彈不得、毫無回旋余地了。

此外與fast有關(guān)的習(xí)語和俚語還有：play fast and loose意思是“反復(fù)無常、朝三暮四?！?/p>

雙方就貨物檢驗方面的細(xì)節(jié)交流了意見，并且很快達(dá)成了一致。

A：Let's get down to the nitty-gritty and continue to talk about the question of inspection.

A：We demand that before delivery you should test and inspect all equipment and parts comprehensively in regard to quality, quantity, specification and performance, then issue the test report along with certificate of inspection agency.

B：We certainly will. Actually, it is our usual practice to inspect all equipment and parts before shipment.

A：After the equipment has been transported to the job site, it must be carefully checked and inspected by our representative and CCIB. You can dispatch your representative to join the open-package inspection, if you like.

B：We will. Please inform us of the date of inspection one month before the open package inspection.

nitty-gritty進(jìn)一步討論，言歸正傳

nitty-gritty這個習(xí)慣用語大約在1965年間開始在美國人的日常交談中流行。誰也不清楚它的出處究竟是什么，但是大家都知道nitty-gritty指事情的要點、細(xì)節(jié)。nittygritty這個習(xí)慣用語也常常被用來表示說話的人急于解決問題，類似于中文的“閑話少說，言歸正傳”。比如：All right, enough talk! Let's get down to the nitty-gritty. I want you to tell me whether you want to sell your company and how much money it'll cost me to buy it.好了好了，閑話少說，我們還是言歸正傳吧！我希望你告訴我：你究竟要不要賣你的公司，我得出多少錢買下它。
