As new orders keep coming in, they have a race against the clock and are working three shifts to step up production. I'm sorry but we simply cannot commit ourselves beyond what the production schedule can fulfill.

a race against the clock和時(shí)間賽跑，爭(zhēng)分奪秒

A race against the clock的字面意思是“和時(shí)間進(jìn)行比賽”，后被引申為“和時(shí)間賽跑，爭(zhēng)分奪秒，在時(shí)間來不及之前快速完成某項(xiàng)任務(wù)”。例如：It was a race against the clock to rescue more wounded people under the collapsed building before the coming aftershock.要搶時(shí)間趕在余震到來之前救出更多的被壓在廢墟中的傷員。

該習(xí)語中的clock也可用time替換，習(xí)語含義不變。

A：Then we come to the next problem-shipment. For such a big order, we propose to have the goods dispatched by sea.

B：I'd like to deliver earlier, but I can't give you a check which I know will bounce.

A：We are scheduled to have a large exhibition in Paris on August 25th. The commodity must therefore be shipped before August; otherwise we won't be in time for the exhibition.

B：I can understand your position. But, to tell you the truth, our factories are heavily committed at the moment, and many clients are in urgent need of our products.

A：Mr. Wang, a timely delivery means a lot to us. Could you persuade your producer to deliver the goods earlier?

B：Because this is the first transaction, I wish we could make a deal. I'll get in touch with the producer and put the screw on them, ask them to try their best to advance the shipment to the end of July. Perhaps some other orders will be canceled. We'll keep you informed.

A：That's extremely thoughtful of you. I'm looking forward to receiving your favorable reply. Finally I have a request about delivery.

B：Go ahead, please.

A：I suggest that you ship the goods by a steamer of Convenience Company. The main reason is that their steamers offer the shortest time for the journey between China and France.

B：OK. No problem. We will go all out into this business.

put the screw on施加壓力

Screw是17世紀(jì)時(shí)蘇格蘭的一種刑具，又稱作thumbscrew或是thumbskins（拇指夾）。這個(gè)刑具形似老虎鉗，上面有可拴緊放松的螺絲，行刑時(shí)，會(huì)將螺絲逐步拴緊以向犯人逼供，犯人的手一受到壓迫的痛苦，便會(huì)在忍受不住時(shí)坦承罪行。這個(gè)成語的意義也由此而來。后被廣泛應(yīng)用，多被用來表示“施加壓力”。例如：Beth's mother puts the screw on her and hopes she can get married before 30.貝絲的母親對(duì)她施加壓力，希望她在30歲以前結(jié)婚。
