Last time we learned how to describe our wishes that was impossible or unlikely to happen or to be true in the past. It is : S wish S had done. And some translation exercises were left and I am about to give to answers to you.

1 但愿我能把煙戒掉. I wish I had given up the weed.

2 我希望那時(shí)那些孩子不要如此胡鬧。

I wished those boys hadn't carried on like that.

3 要是你那時(shí)能更仔細(xì)聽(tīng)我的話(huà)就好了。 I wish you had been more attentive to what I say.

4 他們要是改變一下菜單就好了。 I wish they would change the menu.

5 (她自以為是) 我希望讓她碰個(gè)釘子。

I wish something would happen to puncture her.

6 我真希望你那時(shí)穿衣不要那么保守。

I wish you hadn't been so conventional in the clothes you wear.

【今日主題】

And this morning I would like to tell you a new sentence pattern. 這個(gè)句式表示的是對(duì)現(xiàn)在或是將來(lái)的事情發(fā)生或者是不要發(fā)生的一種主觀愿望。它是什么呢?It is: S would rather (that) S did. 翻譯為：某人寧愿某人做某事。這個(gè)句式中S did 是由that 而引導(dǎo)的賓語(yǔ)從句，that可以省去,從句中要用虛擬語(yǔ)氣。因?yàn)槭菍?duì)現(xiàn)在或是將來(lái)情況的一種主觀希望，則賓語(yǔ)從句中用一般過(guò)去時(shí)。

【情景及例句】

Jane以0.1分之差失去了到美國(guó)參賽的機(jī)會(huì)，當(dāng)她問(wèn)老師結(jié)果時(shí)，老師猶豫的樣子使她有不祥的預(yù)兆，這時(shí)她說(shuō)：“Miss, do tell me. I would rather you told me the truth and I can take it. ”老師，快說(shuō)吧，我寧可知道真相，我可以承受得了的。

不知道大家有過(guò)這種體驗(yàn)沒(méi)有，很多男生在追女生的時(shí)候，還沒(méi)追到手的時(shí)候總是很聽(tīng)從女生的話(huà)，tom 正熱戀這Jane, 幾乎事事都得征得Jane的許可，在今天的派對(duì)上，所有男生都在品嘗雪茄煙，這是Tom還是得問(wèn)：“Do you mind if I smoke with them here?”Jane為了Tom的身心健康，還是殘酷地不同意：“I would rather you didn't.”

想必大家都有體驗(yàn)吧。我們?cè)谛〉臅r(shí)候父母都不跟我們講性的問(wèn)題。Jenny的父母就在這個(gè)問(wèn)題上持相反意見(jiàn)。其父親覺(jué)得晚些時(shí)候在跟小孩說(shuō)此事，可是最近Jenny老在男生家過(guò)夜，其母親是在是忍不住了，說(shuō)：“I have to talk to her about sex. I would rather she knew it now than afterward.”我必須得和他談了。我寧愿她現(xiàn)在知道，而不是以后。

【拓展視野】

這個(gè)句型中的would rather可以變?yōu)閣ould sooner. 意思是一模一樣的。Jane今天看到Jenny原來(lái)的男友Mike和Helen在學(xué)校親親我我的，就問(wèn)Jane：“Dear, I would like to ask you a question whether you really broke up with Mike?”Jane說(shuō)：“I would sooner you didn't ask me that question?”我寧愿你不要問(wèn)我那個(gè)問(wèn)題。
