We left the buffalo camp about eight o'clock, and had a toilsome and harassing march of two hours,

我們八點(diǎn)鐘左右離開布法羅營地，艱難辛苦地跋涉兩個(gè)小時(shí)，

over ridges of hills covered with a ragged forest of scrub oaks, and broken by deep gullies.

穿越道道山脊，路上到處是參差不齊的矮橡樹林，不時(shí)可見幽深僻靜的溪谷溝壑。

About ten o'clock in the morning we came to where this line of rugged hills swept down into a valley,

早上大約十點(diǎn)的時(shí)候，我們來到高矮不一的一處叢林路口，俯瞰腳下林木直抵山下溝谷，

through which flowed the north fork of Red River.

那條紅河北段從腳下溝底流過。

A beautiful meadow, about half a mile wide, enameled with yellow, autumnal flowers,

stretched for two or three miles along the foot of the hills, bordered on the opposite side by the river,

whose banks were fringed with cottonwood trees, the bright foliage of which refreshed and delighted the eye,

after being wearied by the contemplation of monotonous wastes of brown forest.

The meadow was finely diversified by groves and clumps of trees,

草原甸子恰好層次分明，一邊是灌木林，一邊是排列整齊的樹木,

so happily dispersed that they seemed as if set out by the hand of art.

似乎由一雙藝術(shù)大手精巧分開。

As we cast our eyes over this fresh and delightful valley,

當(dāng)我們將目光轉(zhuǎn)向這片清新宜人的山谷，

we beheld a troop of wild horses quietly grazing on a green lawn, about a mile distant, to our right,

while to our left, at nearly the same distance, were several buffaloes;

some feeding, others reposing, and ruminating among the high, rich herbage, under the shade of a clump of cottonwood trees.

草地上牧草很高，長勢茂盛，幾只野牛正在草甸盤桓，有的在啃噬青草，有的在歇息反芻。
