Scene 1. A Chamber in the Castle. Enter Gesler, Officers, and Sarnem, with Tell in chains and guarded.
第一幕：城堡內(nèi)一處房間。蓋斯勒、眾官吏、薩勒姆，以及帶著鐐銬、并由衛(wèi)兵押解的泰爾走了進(jìn)來。
Sarnem says: Down, slave! Behold the governor. Down! down! and beg for mercy.
薩勒姆說：跪下，你這奴隸！看著長官。跪下！跪下！快請求饒恕。
Gesler Seated says: Does he hear?
蓋斯勒坐好后說：他聽見了嗎？
He does, but braves thy power.
他聽見了，但他無視你的威嚴(yán)。
An officer says: Why don't you smite him for that look?
一官吏說：為什么不為他態(tài)度倨傲嚴(yán)加懲罰？
Can I believe My eyes? He smiles!
我不敢相信，他居然在笑！
Nay, grasps His chains as he would make a weapon of them To lay the smiter dead.
天呀，他握著鐵鏈想還擊，好像準(zhǔn)備置人死地。
(To Tell.) Why speakest thou not?
（對泰爾）為什么不說話？
Tell says: For wonder. Wonder?
泰爾說：真是想不到。想不到什么？
Yes, that thou shouldst seem a man.
想不到，看起來你不像人。
What should I seem? A monster.
像什么？一個殘忍的怪物。
Ha! Beware! Think on thy chains.
哈哈！當(dāng)心！ 仔細(xì)看你身上的鐵鐐。
Though they were doubled, and did weigh me down Prostrate to the earth, me thinks I could rise up Erect,
看，這么多鐵鏈，拖拽我快要趴在地上，我覺得，我還是能筆直站起來，
with nothing but the honest pride Of telling thee, usurper, to thy teeth, Thou art a monster!
不憑別的，就是坦誠地告訴你，你這個地道的篡位者，十足的怪獸！
Think upon my chains? How came they on me?
仔細(xì)看我的鐵鏈？這鐵鏈怎么套到我的身上？
Darest thou question me?
你竟敢質(zhì)問我？
Darest thou not answer?
你為什么不敢回答？
Do I hear? Thou dost.
我要聽你的？是的。
