Again, would your lordship a moment suppose

你的貴族身份，但愿再度認(rèn)定，

'T is a case that has happened, and may happen again

已發(fā)生的實(shí)例，可能還會再現(xiàn)，

That the visage or countenance had not a Nose,

容貌或是面孔，若無鼻子央求，

Pray, who would or who could wear spectacles then?

那么究竟有誰，能夠佩戴眼鏡？

On the whole it appears, and my argument shows,

總之問題出現(xiàn)，我的論證表明，

With a reasoning the court will never condemn,

如此這樣推論，法庭不會判定，

That the spectacles plainly were made for the Nose,

眼鏡明明白白，為了鼻子而造，

And the Nose was as plainly intended for them.

鼻子相當(dāng)清楚，皆為眼鏡所用。

Then shifting his side (as a lawyer knows how),

轉(zhuǎn)身調(diào)換立場，律師諳知奧秘，

He pleaded again in behalf of the Eyes:

呼吁支持眼睛，陳情它的原委，

But what were his arguments, few people know,

至于有力證據(jù)，幾乎無人獲悉，

For the court did not think them equally wise.

法庭并不認(rèn)為，陳述同等明智。

So his lordship decreed, with a grave, solemn tone,

莊重嚴(yán)肅口吻，法官頒布結(jié)局，

Decisive and clear, without one if or but,

答案明確清楚，并無條件原因，

That whenever the Nose put his spectacles on,

無論何時(shí)何地，鼻子佩戴眼鏡，

By daylight or candlelight,—Eyes should be shut.

白天抑或黑夜，眼睛應(yīng)該關(guān)閉。
