An Entrance Examination

In an entrance examination of a conservatory of music, the teacher asked one of the boys, “What is the most important physiological quality of a musician?”

“To be deaf,” replied the boy.

“Nonsense!” said the teacher angrily.

“Why, sir! Don’t you know that the most famous musician Beethoven was deaf?” the boy asked in reply disdainfully.

在一個音樂院校的入學(xué)考試中，老師問一個男生：“作為一個音樂家，最重要的生理特質(zhì)是什么呢?”

“失聰，”男生回答。

“胡說八道!”老師氣憤地說。

“哎呀，老師!難道你不知道赫赫有名的音樂家貝多芬耳的耳朵是聾的嗎?”男生有點鄙視地回答。

詞匯講解】

1. conservatory音樂院校。我們熟知的一些音樂類高等院校的名稱：Central Conservatory of Music中央音樂學(xué)院，Xinghai Conservatory of Music

星海音樂學(xué)院。

2. physiological生理的。physiological functions生理機(jī)能;physiological changes生理上的變化

3. quality特質(zhì)。the refreshing quality of a drink飲料的提神性能。quality還有“品德”的意思：He has many good qualities-generosity, diligence, modesty, simplicity.他具有許多優(yōu)秀品質(zhì)：慷慨，勤奮，謙虛，純樸。

4. nonsense胡說(n.)。talk nonsense胡說八道，a pack of nonsense一派胡言。Let’s stop that nonsense right now.我們別再胡鬧了。“無價值的東西”：The raincoats are classic, without any nonsense.雨衣樣式傳統(tǒng)簡約，沒有什么無用的裝飾品。還可以作形容詞，是“無意義的/荒謬的”意思：a nonsense word無意義的詞;a nonsense story荒謬的故事。

5.why表示驚訝、不同意、氣憤等的感嘆。why在這里并不是“為什么”的意思，而只是表示一種感嘆，類似的還有：Why, don’t be silly!嗨，別犯傻了!Why, a child could answer that!哎呀，這連孩子都能回答!

6.disdainfully鄙視地，輕蔑地。be disdainful of riches鄙夷財寶。The lady dismissed her maid with a disdainful nod.貴婦人輕蔑地點一點頭，將女仆打發(fā)走了。
