Why Three Times?

The teacher told the class the story of a man who swam a river three times before breakfast.

Johnny laughed.

"Do you doubt that a good swimmer could do that?" asked the teacher.

"No, sir," answered Johnny, "but I wonder why he did not swim it four times and get back to the side where his clothes were."

為什么是三趟

老師給同學(xué)們講了一個(gè)小故事，說(shuō)有一個(gè)人早飯前要在河里游泳，橫渡三趟。

約翰尼笑了。

老師問(wèn)道：“你不相信一個(gè)游泳很好的人可以做到么?”

約翰尼回答說(shuō)：“不是的，先生，我是不明白他為什么不游四次，這樣他才可以回到放衣服的那邊。”

【詞匯講解】

1.breakfast早餐。有關(guān)習(xí)語(yǔ)：have (或 eat) someone for breakfast (非正式)不費(fèi)吹灰之力對(duì)付(或打敗)某人

2.swim游泳?？梢宰骷拔锘虿患拔飫?dòng)詞。作不及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)還有“眩暈”的意思：He was hot and tired and his head was swimming.他又熱又累, 頭暈?zāi)垦！?/p>

3.doubt懷疑。也有“未確定”的意思：There is not much doubt about his guilt.他有罪幾乎是可以確定的。

4.wonder想知道。作名詞時(shí)有“奇才”的意思：He's a wonder with the way he arranges everything without any help.他不要任何幫忙就把事情樣樣辦妥, 真是個(gè)奇才。
