Former dream architect Dominick “Dom” Cobb(Leonardo Dicaprio)and business partner Arthur(Joseph Gordon Levitt)perform corporate espionage by using an experimental military-developed machine to infiltrate the subconscious of their targets and extract information while dreaming, their latest target being powerful Japanese businessman Saito(Ken Watanabe). Tiered dream within a dream strategies are used and dreamers awaken by a sudden kick or by dying in the dream. However, if the dreamer is the one who dies, the dream “collapses”, Each extractor carries a totem, a personalized small object whose behavior is only predictable to its owner, that serves the purpose of identifying dream-state or reality. The way the totem works is that in the different states, the totem behaves differently. Cobb's totem is a spinning top that perpetually spins in the dream state. The extraction fails due to Mallorie “Mai” Cobb(Marion Cotillard), Cobb's deceased wife, whose memory projection sabotages the mission. Saito reveals that he is in fact auditioning the team to perform the difficult act of inception: implanting an idea or thought into a person's mind while their mind is subconscious.
Saito wishes to break up the energy conglomerate of his ailing competitor Maurice Fischer, by planting this idea in his son and heir Robert Fischer(Cillian Murphy)to disintegrate his father's company. Should Cobb succeed, Saito would use his influence to clear a murder charge against him, so he can return to the U.S. and his children. Cobb accepts the offer and assembles his team: Eames, an identity forger; Yusuf, a chemist who concocts the powerful sedative for a stable dream within a dream strategy; Ariadne, a young architecture student tasked with designing the labyrinth of the dream landscapes; and Athur. Saito accompanies so that he knows whether or not Cobb and his team succeeded in their mission.
The job is set in motion when Maurice Fischer dies and his son accompanies his fathers body from Sydney to Los Angeles. During the flight, Cobb sedates Fischer, and the team bring him into the shared dream. At each stage, the member of the team who is “creating” the dream remains to generate the “kick”, while the other team members fall asleep within the dream to travel further down into Fischer's subconscious. The dreamers will then ride a synchronized series of “kicks”(the van plunging off a bridge, a fall between hotel rooms, and a collapsing building)back up the levels to wake up to reality.
In the first level, Yusuf's rainy downtown dream, the team abducts Fischer. However Fischer's antibody-like trained subconscious projections attack, severely wounding Saito. Eames temporarily takes the appearance of Fischer's godfather, Peter Brawning, to suggest Fischer reconsider his tether's will. Yusuf drives the team in a van as they are sedated into Arthur's dream, a hotel, where the team recruit Fischer, convincing him his kidnapping was orchestrated by Browning. In the third dream level, a snowy mountain fortress dreamed by Eames, Fischer is told they are in Browning's subconscious, but they are, in fact, really going deeper into Fischer's. Yusuf, under assault by trained projections, initiates Ns kick too soon by driving off a bridge, sending Arthurs dream world into zero-gravity and causing an avalanche in Eames' dream. Arthur is forced to improvise a new kick using an elevator that will be synchronized with the van hitting the water, while the team in Eames' dream races to finish the job before the new round of kicks.
In the end, Eames defibrillates Fischer to bring him back up to the third-level mountain fortress, where he enters a safe room and discovers and accepts the idea to split up his father's business empire.
Leaving Cobb behind, the team members escape by riding the kicks back up the levels of the dream. Cobb eventually finds an elderly Saito who has been waiting in Limbo for decades in dream time(just a short time in real time), the two help each other to remember their arrangement, and the team awakens on the flight. Cobb passes through U.S. customs, and reunites with his children at home, where he uses Mal's totem, a spinning top, to test reality, but is distracted by his children before he can see the result.

I've been fascinated by dreams my whole life, since I was a kid, and I think the relationship between movies and dreams is something that's always interested me, and I liked the idea of trying to portray dreams on film. I'd been working on the script for some time, really about ten years in the form that you've seen it in, with this idea of this kind of heist structure. I think really, for me, the primary interest in dreams and in making this film is this notion that, while you're asleep, you can create an entire world that you're also experiencing without realizing that you're doing that. I think that says a lot about the potential of the human mind, especially the creative potential. It's something I find fascinating.
The thing I just want to point out that people might not be aware of is that we had a stunt guy who looks exactly like Joe Gordon Levitt made up perfectly, and he stood there on set every day for three weeks and didn't do a thing 'cause Joe insisted on doing absolutely everything himself, apart from, as I've been reminded, one shot where the stunt guy performed. Everything else he did himself, and he just did the most incredible job with these bizarre rigs and these bizarre sort of torture devices.
For me, when you look a the idea of being able to create a limitless world and use it almost as a playground for action and adventure and so forth, I naturally gravitate toward cinematic worlds, whether it's the Bond films and things like that... So without being too self-conscious about it or without too much intention as I was writing it, I certainly allowed my mind to wander where it would naturally, and I think a lot of the tropes from different genres of movies, heist films, spy films, that kind of thing, they therefore sort of naturally sit in that world.
