We Are in an Aging Society。
Aged society, a phenomenon previously seen in the western world, has become a concern in contemporary China. How to treat the elders, to shrug off the responsibility of children we are to shoulder or to repay the love and care parents give us as does the girl to her aged mother in the picture?
No doubt, senior citizens are hardly as strong as they were in their prime years, thus unsuitable for heavy work. No longer can they carry us on their back to school or cook delicacies for us in the kitchen. Some of them even cannot take care of their daily life because, inevitably, they will fall victims to various diseases. As a result, some regard them as burdens to be kicked about.
However, they are our parents and grandparents. They give us life and shape our soul. They are the people who make us who we are. In the days without their company, we might have less financial burden on our shoulder, but surely our heart cannot bear the pain – we miss the most valuable thing in the world – love from parents and grandparents.
Stop thinking what the elders can do for us. Think what we can do for them. Cook them a dinner when we are at home. Give them a call when we are away.
As a nation renowned in the world for many of its virtues, Chinese people have been practicing filial piety throughout history. Many much-told stories reiterate this time-honored virtue of loving and respecting the elders, like the story of Ti Ying in the West Han Dynasty who risked her life in order to save her wronged father from corporal punishment.
Those who tried every means to avoid their duty of looking after their elders should bear in mind that they are much indebted to their parents for their birth and growth. Without the loving care and unrelenting work of their parents, how could they have grown up healthy and successful? How could it be possible for them to go about without the pricks of conscience?
Every one of us should live up to the virtues passed down to us by our ancestors. Only in this way can we be worthy of the name of a Chinese.
Dear President:
As a graduating student who has learned a lot under the guidance of world-renowned professors in this university, I find most students are not as fit or as healthy as their predecessors. Therefore, I venture to put forward some suggestions on how to improve students’ physical condition.
First of all, they need more time for sports. Although sports can not only improve fitness, but also discipline the mind, most of their time is spent in libraries, laboratories or in front of computers. Therefore, I would appreciate it if you could provide more facilities and opportunities to bring students into gyms or onto the running tracks.
Thank you for your attention to this letter.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming
