Our ancestors’ ability to metabolize alcohol may have saved them from extinction, scientists claim.
Evolving to better handle booze could have given our prehistoric ape forebears the edge over rival species in ancient times, bringing them “back from the brink.”
In a new book, titled “Alcohol And Humans: A Long And Social Affair,” professors Dr. Kim Hockings and Dr. Robin Dunbar write that early African apes, who lived around 10 million years ago, evolved to carry a protein which allowed them to eat fallen fruits on the forest floor — many of which had begun to ferment and become alcoholic.
It was a skill which gave them a major advantage in the survival against rival monkey species, who could only eat unripe fruits. At the time, ape populations were believed to have been dwindling, partly thanks to this fierce competition for food.
Monkeys couldn’t — and still can’t — tolerate the ethanol in overripe fruits, which the authors say “might have brought apes back from the brink” of extinction.
“Even today we see great apes eating fermented fruit and even drinking palm wine produced by humans,” said Dr. Hockings, from the University of Exeter.
“It’s hard to be certain of why they do this and this reflects the complex history of our own relationship with alcohol.”
“One interesting point is that the alcohol level in fallen fruit is usually about 1-4 percent — something like weak beer.”
“Yet much of the alcohol consumed by humans today is far stronger than this.”
“As with other substances like salt and sugar, the problem may not be the substance itself but the concentrations we now have access to.”
Hockings co-authored the book with Dr. Dunbar, Professor of Evolutionary Psychology at the University of Oxford.
The pair hope to test the ethanol levels in wild fruits to learn more about how species process alcohol.
