During the first presidential debate between Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump, the candidates tangle over trade and the economy. At times, moderator Lester Holt allows the candidates to speak over each other and go beyond their two-minute time limits.

The candidates are still discussing race and racial healing and moderator Lester Holt brings up the birther issue Donald Trump perpetrated against President Barack Obama.

Trump's first response is to use a disputed fact that the issue was first raised by the Clinton campaign in 2008.

Holt says that Obama produced a birth certificate showing he was born in Hawaii. Holt asks Trump again, why he continued for the next five years. Trump says Obama should have produced it earlier.
