Not eight inches of perpendicular rope were visible at the bows. Seems it credible that by three such thin threads the great Leviathan was suspended like the big weight to an eight day clock. Suspended? and to what? To three bits of board. Is this the creature of whom it was once so triumphantly said—"Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish-spears? The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold, the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon: he esteemeth iron as straw; the arrow cannot make him flee; darts are counted as stubble; he laugheth at the shaking of a spear!" This the creature? this he? Oh! that unfulfilments should follow the prophets. For with the strength of a thousand thighs in his tail, Leviathan had run his head under the mountains of the sea, to hide him from the Pequod's fishspears!

船頭上所看到的垂直的繩索還沒有八英寸長。看來似乎一點不假，這樣三根細繩子，就把這條大鯨象吊住一只八天大鐘般吊起了。吊起么？吊什么？吊三片小木板么？難道這就是那只曾經被非常洋洋得意地談論著的畜生么？——"你能用倒鉤槍扎滿它的皮？能用魚叉叉滿它的頭么？若用刀，用槍，用標槍，用尖槍扎它，都是無用；它以鐵為干草，箭不能恐嚇它，使它逃避，彈石在它看為碎秸，它嗤笑短槍颼的響聲！"（見《舊約·約伯記》第四十一章七-二十六-二十九節(jié)。）就是這只畜生么？這就是它嗎？??！這種預言是注定不能應驗了。因為，這條大鯨為了逃避"裴廓德號"的魚槍，已經用它那有千鈞之力的尾巴，連奔帶跑地把它的頭鉆進大海里去了！

在那午后的斜陽中，三只小艇投在海面上的陰影，真是又長又闊，足以掩護瑟克西斯（瑟克西斯（公元前519—465）——波斯王。）的半支軍隊。究竟這么許多晃蕩在這條受傷大鯨頭頂的巨大的魔影，它會感到多么害怕，誰又說得上來呢！
