But as the junior mates were hurrying to execute the order, a pale man, with a bandaged head, arrested them--Radney the chief mate. Ever since the blow, he had lain in his berth; but that morning, hearing the tumult on the deck, he had crept out, and thus far had watched the whole scene. Such was the state of his mouth, that he could hardly speak; but mumbling something about his being willing and able to do what the captain dared not attempt, he snatched the rope and advanced to his pinioned foe.

可是，當二副和三副正在急急執(zhí)行命令時，一個臉色蒼白、頭上綁著繃帶的人，不讓他們執(zhí)行命令——原來就是大副拉德尼。他自從吃了那一拳后，就一直躺在吊鋪上；可是，那天早晨，聽到了甲板上的哄鬧聲，他悄悄地走了出來，一直在注意整個情況發(fā)展。由于他的嘴巴是這種情況，所以他不大說得來話，只是呢呢喃喃地說什么船長所不敢一試的，他倒愿意和能夠來試一試，于是，他抓起繩子，沖到他的背綁著的仇人跟前。

Just after dark that day, when one watch had retired below, a clamor was heard in the forecastle; and the twotrembling traitors running up, besieged the cabin door, saying they durst not consort with the crew. Entreaties, cuffs, and kicks could not drive them back, so at their own instance they were put down in the ship's run for salvation. Still, no sign of mutiny reappeared among the rest.

就在當天天黑后，當一個值班人到下邊去休息的時候，他聽到船頭樓里有一陣吵鬧聲；接著，那兩個嚇得發(fā)抖的叛徒跑了出來，走到船長室門口，說是他們跟水手們都合不來。哄呀，打呀，踢呀都無法把他們趕回去，因此，為了安全起見，就按照他們自己的請求，把他們安置在艙里。在其余那些人中間，倒也沒有再要暴動的跡象。
