He was naturally a very nervous, shuddering sort of little fellow, this bread-faced steward; the progeny of a bankrupt baker and a hospital nurse. And what with the standing spectacle of the black terrific Ahab, and the periodical tumultuous visitations of these three savages, Dough-Boy's whole life was one continual lip-quiver. Commonly, after seeing the harpooneers furnished with all things they demanded, he would escape from their clutches into his little pantry adjoining, and fearfully peep out at them through the blinds of its door, till all was over.

看到魁魁格高坐在塔斯蒂哥的對面,他那副銼刀似的牙齒跟那個印第安人的牙齒兩相對峙,真夠發(fā)噱;大個兒則坐在地上,跟他們形成個十字形,因為凳子會教他那只象扎彩的柩車似的頭顱碰著那些矮船梁;他那巨大的四肢每一晃動,就會教那間低矮的艙室整個兒搖動起來,如同一只非洲大象上了大船。但是,盡管如此,這個大黑人不僅是文文雅雅,而且飲食非常有度。他只吃這樣很小的幾口東西,就支持得了他這么一個體軀粗大。如此超群的人的活力,似乎是難以置信的。但是,毫無疑問,這個了不起的野人是痛飲了豐饒的太空養(yǎng)料才長得如此茁壯,他還通過那闊大的鼻孔吸收了人間的崇高生活。巨人的形成與養(yǎng)育并不是靠牛肉或者面包。
