BOOK I. (Folio) CHAPTER IV. (Hump Back).--Thiswhale is often seen on the northern American coast.He has been frequently captured there, and towedinto harbor. He has a great pack on him like apeddler; or you might call him the Elephant andCastle whale. At any rate, the popular name forhim does not sufficiently distinguish him, since thesperm whale also has a hump though a smaller one.His oil is not very valuable. He has baleen. He is themost gamesome and light-hearted of all the whales,making more gay foam and white water generallythan any other of them.

BOOK I. (Folio), CHAPTER V. ( Razor Back).--Of this whale little is known but his name. I haveseen him at a distance off Cape Horn. Of a retiring nature, he eludes both hunters andphilosophers. Though no coward, he has never yet shown any part of him but his back, whichrises in a long sharp ridge. Let him go. I know little more of him, nor does anybody else.

第一篇(對開型)　第五章(剃刀鯨)...關(guān)于這一種鯨,除了它的名稱以外,是不大見得到的。我曾在距合恩角不遠(yuǎn)的地方看到過它一次。它天性孤僻,既回避獵手,又回避哲學(xué)家們。雖然它不是膽小鬼,可是它除了露出它的背部以外,其它任何部分都從來沒有露出來過,它那背部一聳出來就象個高高的陡峰。隨它去吧。我對它所知道的僅此而已,隨便哪一個人也不會知道得更多。

BOOK I. (Folio), CHAPTER VI. (Sulphur Bottom).--Another retiring gentleman, with abrimstone belly, doubtless got by scraping along the Tartarian tiles in some of his profounderdivings. He is seldom seen; at least I have never seen him except in the remoter southernseas, and then always at too great a distance to study his countenance. He is never chased; hewould run away with rope-walks of line. Prodigies are told of him. Adieu, Sulphur Bottom! I cansay nothing more that is true of ye, nor can the oldest Nantucketer.
