For Buddhists in Thailand, and other South Asiancountries, gold is an element that signifies homage.

A gift of gold is the ultimate demonstration ofone's piety.

金制禮物是表示虔誠(chéng)的終極體現(xiàn)。

The meritorious act of putting gold leaf on thesurface of a Buddha's skin is to commemorate theliving Buddha,

為佛像貼上金箔是為了紀(jì)念佛陀。

who had a golden-like aura, a radiance, they believe.

因?yàn)樗麄兿嘈欧鹜釉谑罆r(shí)有金子般的光暈環(huán)繞著他。

But gold and its association with wealth and right is also the way Thai monarchs have used ashowy form of piety to forge a strong relationship between Buddha's ideas and the power ofthe state.

但黃金本身及其與財(cái)富、權(quán)力的聯(lián)系是泰國(guó)君王展現(xiàn)虔誠(chéng)的賣弄方式。并以此來(lái)偽造佛陀思想與國(guó)家權(quán)力之間的緊密聯(lián)系。

It was King Rama III who had the statue of the reclining Buddha opulently restored at theheight of his reign in the mid-19th century.

19世紀(jì)中葉，國(guó)王拉瑪三世在其統(tǒng)治的巔峰時(shí)期，將這尊臥佛像進(jìn)行了修復(fù)。

It's called the Lion Pose, so, as he lay there in the lion pose as he was preparing to die.

這姿勢(shì)叫做“獅姿”。佛陀在迎接死亡時(shí)就是以“獅姿”側(cè)臥。

It's described that he lay down on his right side and he rested his head on his right hand.

他右脅著席，頭枕在右手上，疊足安臥。

There is a reason that this Buddha has got such a serene smile - it's because he has achievedenlightenment, Nirvana.

佛陀能有如此安詳?shù)男θ菔怯性虻?。這是因?yàn)樗呀?jīng)獲得覺(jué)悟——涅槃。

It means that he has escaped what Buddhists call Samsara, an endless cycle of life,

這意味著他已經(jīng)脫離佛教所稱的“輪回”

of birth and death, of passion and desire and delusion, that can only lead to pain andsuffering.

一種生死相續(xù)，充滿貪嗔癡的無(wú)盡的生命循環(huán)，而這只能導(dǎo)致痛苦與折磨。

Samsara effectively constitutes a cycle of birth and re-birth,

輪回有效地構(gòu)筑了生與重生的循環(huán)，

and as long as we are in Samsara we are born innumerable times and moving from oneexistence to the next.

只要身處輪回，我們都將無(wú)數(shù)次地從一個(gè)存在轉(zhuǎn)到下一個(gè)存在。

We can be re-born as a human being, as a divinity, or you can be re-born as an animal, etc.

下一世我們可能是人，也可能是神還可能作為動(dòng)物等重生。
