精靈鼠小弟 第20期:鼠小弟出門(mén)散步記

One morning when the wind was from the west, Stuart put on his sailor suit and his sailor hat, took his spyglass down from the shelf, and set out for a walk, full of the joy of life and the fear of dogs.

一天早上，當(dāng)風(fēng)從西邊刮過(guò)來(lái)時(shí)，斯圖亞特穿起他的水手服，戴上他的平頂草帽，從架子上摘下他的小型單筒望遠(yuǎn)鏡，滿懷著生活的快樂(lè)和對(duì)狗的恐懼出去散步了。

With a rolling gait he sauntered along toward Fifth Avenue, keeping a sharp look out.

他搖搖擺擺地向第五大街逛去，時(shí)刻警惕地四處了望著。

Whenever he spied a dog through his glass, Stuart would hurry to the nearest doorman, climb his trouser leg, and hide in the tails of his uniform.

只要從他的望遠(yuǎn)鏡里一看到狗，斯圖亞特就急忙跑到離他最近的看門(mén)人那里，爬到他的褲腿里，把尾巴藏到他的制服下面。

And once, when no doorman was handy, he had to crawl into a yesterday's paper and roll himself up in the second section till danger was past.

有一次，旁邊沒(méi)有看門(mén)人，他就爬到一卷昨天的舊報(bào)里，蜷縮起來(lái)，直到危險(xiǎn)過(guò)去。

At the corner of Fifth Avenue there were several people waiting for the uptown bus, and Stuart joined them.

在第五大街的街角有幾個(gè)人正在那里等進(jìn)城的公共汽車，斯圖亞特也跑到他們中間。

Nobody noticed him, because he wasn't tall enoughto be noticed.

沒(méi)人注意他，因?yàn)樗€沒(méi)有高得足以引起人們的注意。

I'm not tall enough to be noticed,thought Stuart, yet I'm tall enough to want to go to Seventy-second Street.

我沒(méi)能高得讓人注意，”斯圖亞特想。“可我還是想去第72街。

When the bus came into view, all the men waved their canes and brief cases at the driver, and Stuart waved his spyglass.

當(dāng)公共汽車開(kāi)過(guò)來(lái)，所有人都拿著他們的手杖和公文包上車了，斯圖亞特也拎著他的小望遠(yuǎn)鏡上了車。

Then, knowing that the step of the bus would be too high for him,

因?yàn)槟亲粚?duì)他來(lái)說(shuō)太高了，

Stuart seized hold of the cuff of a gentleman's pants and was swung aboard without any trouble or inconvenience whatever.

斯圖亞特便趴在一個(gè)紳士的褲腳上，這樣就可以毫無(wú)麻煩的坐車，也不會(huì)引起別人的注意了。
