Five hundred years after his coronation, a new side of Britain's most notorious monarch is emerging. I went to investigate the softer side to the tyrant king.

A king who could win hearts as well as cut off heads, England's Henry VIII was not just a gluttonous serial marrier. British historian David Starkey takes us through the British Library and opens a window to Henry's passionate, sensitive side.

This love letter in French from Henry to Anne is now back in England after 500 years. Starkey says the letter changed the world.

He writes in it of his immovable determination to marry her. That is going to make England Protestant-it's actually going to make America Protestant-and all for the love of a woman.

King Henry wrote that letter on this desk belonging to Catherine of Aragon, who he was scandalously still married to.

And that takes six years, which tears England apart, Henry apart, transforms him from this slim, young, elegant, charming man into the beginning of the monstrous tyrant. So there's extraordinary irony. What changes Henry for the worse is love.
