[00:08.59]THE COURAGE OF A WINNER
[00:11.01]Many people will know about Lance Armstrong's
[00:13.84]seven wins in the Tour be France,
[00:16.06]but fewer people will have heard of his battle
[00:18.32]with cancer.In the summer of 1996,
[00:22.11]everything must have been going perfectly
[00:24.26]for the twenty-five-year-old Texan cyclist.
[00:27.06]He had just won a major race
[00:28.72]and was ranked 7th in the world.
[00:30.93]He had been offered contracts
[00:32.61]by big sporting companies, such as Nike,
[00:35.17]and did not need to worry about money.
[00:37.34]His future looked bright.
[00:39.75]Then, in September 1996.
[00:42.05]Armstrong went to the doctor with a problem.
[00:44.41]He should have gone earlier,
[00:45.71]but he had ignored the pain
[00:47.22]so that he could continue racing.
[00:49.38]When he went to the doctor that day,
[00:51.13]he could not have known
[00:52.44]what was about to happen to him.
[00:54.23]Within two hours,
[00:55.42]he had been diagnosed as having cancer
[00:57.82]which had spread do his lungs.
[00:59.79]There was a 40% chance he would survive
[01:02.60]and a 60% chance he might die.
