honour / honor 用法注意點
1. 泛指一般意義的“榮譽”“光榮”“信譽”等,是不可數(shù)名詞;具體指“使感到光榮的事或人”或“榮幸”等,是可數(shù)名詞,但多用單數(shù)形式。如:
To lose honour is more than to lose life. 失去信譽(榮譽)甚于失去生命。
It’s a great honour to receive that prize. 能獲得那個獎中無上的榮耀。
比較下面兩句:
H brought honour to his family. 他為家庭爭了光。
He is an honour to his family. 他是全家人的光榮。
2. do sb honour與do honour to sb都可以說,有以下兩種主要用法:
(1) 對某人表示敬意或紀念。如:
They did honour to the dead. 他們向死者致敬。
(2) 給某人帶來榮譽或使某人受到尊敬。如:
His contributions to science do honour to our country. 他在科學(xué)上的貢獻為祖國增了光。
比較同義句:
We attended his birthday party to do himhonour.=We attended his birthday party to do honour to him. 我們 參加了他的生日晚會以表示對他的敬意。
3. 用于do sb the honour of doing [to do] sth,用于修飾honour的定語可以是不定式,也可以是of doing sth,其意為“給某人面子做某事”“給某人做某事的榮幸”。如:
Would you do me the honour of dancing with me?=Would you do me the honour to dance with me? 能請你跳曲舞嗎?
類似地,用于have the honour of doing [to do] sth,用于修飾honour的定語可以是不定式,也可以是of doing sth,其意為“有幸做某事”“榮幸地做某事”。如:
May I have the honour of dancing with you?=May Ihave the honour to dance with you? 能請你跳曲舞嗎?
4. 用于 in honour of, 相當于一個復(fù)合介詞,其意為“為向……表示敬意”“為紀念……”“為祝賀……”“為歡迎……”“為招待……”等。如:
We had a party in honour of his birthday. 為了祝賀他的生日我們舉行了一個晚會。
