On a visit to Tokyo, the US Defense Secretary ChuckHagel has promised his country will stand by itssecurity commitments to Japan. "One of thereasons that I'm here is to reassure our allies thatyes, we are going through budget restraints, yes,we are drawing down some of our force. We're notretreating from the world." Chuck Hagel, the US Defense Secretary and his comments comeafter Russia's annexation of Crimea caused concern in East Asia because of territorial disputesthere. As our East Asia editor Michael Bristol explains. "Japan's main concerns are the sameconcerns of many of their countries in Southeast Asia. That's China. Japan has a PacifistConstitution which limits its military involvement. And America stepped in. That was after theSecond World War. America stepped in to guarantee safety. It said all along that it will do that. And it said so with other countries as well as in regions, Taiwan, for example. It has to sell itsarms to defend itself against China. But because of what happened in Crimea, many people inSoutheast Asia think of what happens if China does that, for example, to Taiwan or some of theislands which it contests in the South China Sea."

Now the world of classical music is set to be in turmoil after comments made by a famousconductor about the potential of women in the industry. Women couldn't be as good as menfor biological reasons. One of his pupils is making her conducting debut in a sold-out concertin Amsterdam this weekend.

We are standing just behind the string section. They are running through the third scene fromStravinsky's The Rake's Progress. She is in control. "You know, I need time to take the breath. But my breath..." So was it surprising to hear that her teacher told Finnish television that she and other women don't have what it takes to conduct? "Women can try. But they are solimited in many ways. It's biological." "You know, I cried. A Finnish friend of mine read me wordfor word. Of course, I have to do with the questions all the time, but this was the first realkind of slap in the face."
