One year ago today twenty children and six adults were gunned down at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtowne Connecticut. The anniversary is being marked with a series of low-key ceremonies involving the families of those who died. The killing so horrified the nation that many predicted congress would soon tighten gun legislation. Nicole Hockley lost her six-year-old son Dylan in the shooting. She is campaigning with other Newtowne parents to reduce gun violence. And she spoke to our correspondent Mark Mardell first explaining her feelings twelve months on from her child's murder.
"Every day is difficult."
"Are you surprised that gun control hasn't happen?"
"I was certainly disappointed that something as simple as background checks wasn't passed in April especially considering how many Americans support it including firearm's retailers. But unfortunately this became case of politics rather than policy. And really if we are gonna make any change and see anything positive come from this, it's going to happen at a community level and through people not through legislation. I mean we never thought legislation was the only answer."
"Why do you think it's been so difficult?"
"It's become a fight rather than a conversation. People are very polarized and it's become highly political so you are either for freedom or control. There is not a lot of room or movement happening in the middle area which is where the majority of people are."
