I am Jackie Leonard with a selection of highlights from across BBC World Service News today.

Coming up, a manhunt for a lone gunman continues in Paris as media institutions feel underattack. The man of Toronto is stripped of most of his power but he believes he is beingvictimized.

A perfect launch for NASA has an unmanned spacecraft goes to Mars.

And Amnesty urges Katar to end abuse of those involved in construction work ahead of theWork Cup. We hear Nepal where many of the migrants come from.

"I'll never go to Katar again. And that's what I tell my friends. Instead of dying in Katar, it'sbetter to die here in Nepal."

And finally there's a new word for the Oxford English Dictionary and even the Pope is a fan.

But first, more on the huge manhunt that's underway in Paris. It follows several gun-relatedincidents across the city by what's believed to be a lone gunman. He reportedly opened fire ata French national newspaper La Liberation and a major bank. It's not yet clear what was thegunman's motivation, but the media are feeling under attack. On Friday staff of the BMFTelevision Channel was threatened by an armed man. President Francois Hollande gave hisreaction to events during his visit to Israel.

"There were two media organizations targeted, it seems by the same attacker even though itwas for the justice system to establish the link. It is always freedom of speech that is the targetin these attacks. So in the democracy, protecting this freedom more vigilantly and ever is whatwe should aim for. I also gave instructions to the Interior Minister to ensure that all mediaorganizations are protected."

The human rights group Amnesty International says migrant labors in Katar are being treatedlike animals. It's for the pressure on the oil-rich state following reports earlier this year thatdozens of workers have been dying after being forced to work long hours in temperatures thatoften rise about 50 degrees. The highest number of death has been among workers fromimpoverished Nepal.

The editors of the Oxford Dictionaries have named "selfie" as the word of 2013. A selfie, if youdidn't know, is a photo of a user taken by him or herself with a smart phone or webcam andthen upload it onto a social media website. It's grown in popularity over recent months asmillions of people including celebrities and even the Pope have posted them online.
