[00:11.00]Subject:Traveling Experiences!
[00:12.00]Date:20/11 7:15 PM
[00:13.00]Yesterday,I gave a presentation in class about my student exchange to Canada.
[00:14.00]I remembered many great times.I sure learned a lot,too!
[00:15.00]Do you remember when we went snowmobiling on the lake behind your house?
[00:16.00]It was so cold that day and we were trying to start a fire on the ice.
[00:17.00]Remember when we had to walk in snow up to our things
[00:18.00]to get more wood for the fire?
[00:19.00]My classmates were surprised that your parents came with us
[00:20.00]and spent the whole day playing in the snow.
[00:21.00]I think families in Canada have more free time than families in China.
[00:22.00]Yes,I noticed that when I visited China.
[00:23.00]I really loved China. And not only because of the good food!
[00:24.00]You have more history than we do in Canada.
[00:25.00]I loved the old buildings and temples
[00:26.00]and all the stories that made the places come alive.
[00:27.00]In the Chinese countryside, like at the Great Wall,
[00:28.00]I not only felt a connection to nature, but also a connection to the past.
[00:29.00]I could understand the Chinese respect for ancestors a little better.
[00:30.00]We don't experstand that as much in Canada.
[00:31.00]Yes,between your culture and my culture many things are different,
[00:32.00]and yet in some ways people are similar all over the world.
[00:33.00]That's why we can be friends!
[00:34.00]Travelling is a wonderful way to explore the differences and similarities.
[00:35.00]We can learn so much when we travel to other countries.
[00:36.00]My views of the world have changed because of travelling.
[00:37.00]Besides the language differences,I noticed many examples
[00:38.00]of how people have a different way of understanding the world.
[00:39.00]When I went to Mexico I saw that Mexican people
[00:40.00]have fewer"things"than we do in Canada,
[00:41.00]and they don't seem to think "things"are important in life.
[00:42.00]Mexican people tend to use things and share things,
[00:43.00]rather than collect things.
[00:44.00]Yeah,I know what you mean. When I came to Canada,
[00:45.00]I was surprised to see how much stuff people had,
[00:46.00]and how big the houses were, and how much space there was all around.
[00:47.00]Li Ming,do you realize what else you learned when you came here?
[00:48.00]You learned the word"stuff"!You sound very Canadian,now.Wow!
[00:49.00]Thanks,Jenny.spending time in Canada with an English-speaking family
[00:50.00]has helped me to improve my speaking a lot.
[00:51.00]But I still want to learn more.
[00:52.00]I am applying to go to a summer camp in Australia next year.
[00:53.00]We will do some touring and some camping.
[00:54.00]There will be young people from all over the world.
[00:55.00]I'm really looking forward to it.Why don't you come along with us?
[00:56.00]That sounds great!I would love to come,
[00:57.00]but I already have a plan for next summer.
[00:58.00]I have been invited to join a group of teens from my school on a trip to Brazil.
[00:59.00]We will go there weeks to work with the poor people there.
[-1:00.00]Some of us will help local people build a small medical centre,
[-1:-1.00]and some of us will teach the children.
[-1:-2.00]I am very excited,but a little nervous,too.
[-1:-3.00]I will learn a lot about poverty around the world
[-1:-4.00]and I will be able to practise my Portugwese.
[-1:-5.00]I think travelling to many different countries
[-1:-6.00]can help us understand one another better.
[-1:-7.00]Then the whole world can live together more peacefully.
[-1:-8.00]Good luck with your plans,Jenny.
[-1:-9.00]I think both of us will have many valuable experiences next summer.
[-1:10.00]And maybe I won't change the world on this trip,
[-1:11.00]but at least I will to see my first kangaroo!

[-1:15.00]First,listen to the flight attendant's announcement
[-1:16.00]on an airplane before take-off.

[-1:22.00]Travel with Danny-letters to Li Ming
[-1:23.00]1.Denny's first stop:London
[-1:24.00]Jan 14,2003 Dear Li Ming,
[-1:25.00]Wow!I was so lucky to win trip around the world!
[-1:26.00]I just arrived in London a few days ago,and I am having a great time.
[-1:27.00]The city is huge;someone on the train told me there are 12 million people here,
[-1:28.00]and I believe it! I have already lots of the major sights;
[-1:29.00]the House of Parliament and Big Ben,Westminster Abbey and of course,
[-1:30.00]Buckingham Palace.Buckingham palace is the home of Queen Elizabeth II
[-1:31.00]and the rest of the royal family.
[-1:32.00]It's magnificent!I also went to the Piccadilly circus
[-1:33.00]and took a walk around Trafalgar Square.
[-1:34.00]Being a tourist here can be quite expensive,
[-1:35.00]but my friends and I have found a few ways to save money.
[-1:36.00]Most restaurants,for example,are very costly,
[-1:37.00]but the East Indian curry houses are quite reasonable.
[-1:38.00]Not only that, but the food is delicious! Then,of course,
[-1:39.00]there's the traditional English favourite:fish and chiips.
[-1:40.00]My friend and I have been eating lots of this as well.
[-1:41.00]For accommodation,I'm staying at a nice B&B on the West side of London.
[-1:42.00]Travellers on a really tight budget stay in hostels,
[-1:43.00]since they are the cheapest places to stay.
[-1:44.00]Hostels usually have larger rooms with many beds inside,
[-1:45.00]and travellers simply rent a bed for th night.
[-1:46.00]There are hostels all over the world, including China,Li Ming!
[-1:47.00]I met a girl here. She stayed at the Xi'an Shuyuan International Youth Hostel,
[-1:48.00]and she had a wonderful time there!
[-1:49.00]Well,Li Ming, that's about it for now!
[-1:50.00]Tomorrow I'm going to see St.Paul's Cathedral,
[-1:51.00]which is supposed to be just magnificent.
[-1:52.00]I'll be in London for another week, and then off to Cape Town for then days!
[-1:53.00]Wish me luck!Your friend,Danny
[-1:54.00]2.Danny's second stop:Cape Town,South Africa
[-1:55.00]Jan 30,2003 Hi Li Ming,
[-1:56.00]Well I've made it safely to my second destinations:Cape Town,South Africa.
[-1:57.00]What a different!First of all,it is so hot here!
[-1:58.00]We're in the southern hemisphere,so while it's winter in the U.K.right now,
[-1:59.00]it's summer here in South Africa.
[-2:00.00]Did you know that South Africa has eleven official languages?
[-2:-1.00]In addition to English,
[-2:-2.00]people in different parts of the country
[-2:-3.00]speak neat languages like Zulu,Xhosa, and Afrikaans.
[-2:-4.00]in the streets of Cape Town, you hear mostly Afrikaans and Xhosa,
[-2:-5.00]but of course, almost everyone speaks English as well.
[-2:-6.00]The coolest thing about Cape Town
[-2:-7.00]is that there's a mountain right in the middle of it!
[-2:-8.00]It's called Table Mountain, because it looks just like a table.
[-2:-9.00]You may have seen pictures of it before.
[-2:10.00]A few days ago,I hiked to very top of Table mountain.
[-2:11.00]The view from there was just amazing!
[-2:12.00]You could look way out over the city to the Atlantic Ocean.
[-2:13.00]It was just beautiful! [-2:14.00]Yesterday,I went on a tour to see great white sharks in the ocean.
[-2:15.00]It was so exciting!A group of six of us met the tour guide in the morning,
[-2:16.00]and he took us out on the boat. When we got far enough from the shore,
[-2:17.00]the guide stopped the boat and put some meat in the ocean ot attract the sharks.
[-2:18.00]After a few minutes, one came close to our boat.
[-2:19.00]One by one,we got in the small cage at the end of the boat,
[-2:20.00]which the guide lowered under the water so that we could see the shark.
[-2:21.00]It was so big!I can't believe I was brave enough to get into that cage.
[-2:22.00]Did you know that great white sharks have 3000 teeth?
[-2:23.00]I can't wait to tell you more stories when I get back home.
[-2:24.00]But first,I have one stop!I'll write again soon!You friend,Danny
[-2:25.00]3.Danny's third stop:New York Feb 11,2003
[-2:26.00]Hi Li Ming,Can you guess where I am now?"The Big Apple!"
[-2:27.00]That's the nickname for New York City.
[-2:28.00]I thought London was big,but New York is even bigger!
[-2:29.00]There are 18 million people here.
[-2:30.00]It's no wonder people call it"the Capital of the World"!
[-2:31.00]I learned that New York is really like five cities in one:
[-2:32.00]Manhattan,the Bronx,Brooklyn,Queens and Staten Island.
[-2:33.00]I've spent most of my time in Manhattan[-2:34.00]since there's just so much to see there.
[-2:35.00]I've walked down Broadway and around Times Square,
[-2:36.00]and I even got to see the Empire State Building!
[-2:37.00]Yesterday I went to se Radio City Music Hall,
[-2:38.00]the biggest indoor theatre in the would! It was really incredible.
[-2:39.00]Tomorrow,I'm planning to take a ferry boat from Manhattan to Staten Island.
[-2:40.00]That ferry passes the Statue of Liberty!
[-2:41.00]Do you know that building is over 100 years old?
[-2:42.00]In 1886,it was given to the United States as a gift from France,
[-2:43.00]in recognition of the friendship they built during the American Revolution.
[-2:44.00]At 4'6''her nose is almost as tall as you,Li Ming!
[-2:45.00]I can hardly wait to see her!Well,I guess that's all for now.
[-2:46.00]Take care,Li Ming,and I'll see you soon!Your friend,Danny
