[00:00.00] UNIT 10
[00:03.50]Saying Goodbye
[00:07.26]Integrated skills development
[00:12.02]Passage A Beginning and an End
[00:19.67]"I've forgotten the last time that I cried.
[00:25.42]But I really can not cheer up now,"said Philip,
[00:30.75]a graduate majoring in physics at a state university.
[00:36.21]Philip drank a lot of wine while having supper with a few friends.
[00:42.58]Being half drunk,he was speaking from the bottom of his heart.
[00:48.74]As the end of their academic career approaches,
[00:54.52]some soon-to-be graduates become sad and drown their sorrows in alcohol.
[01:02.17]They find a restaurant, order a few dishes and beer and settle down to chat.
[01:10.22]Though excited at the start of the evening, they gradually become depressed.
[01:16.46]Are these graduates simply uncertain of the future,
[01:22.13]or do they feel hopeless of the future?
[01:26.49]One student said,By now,almost everybody has found a job.
[01:33.15]No need to consider it further.
[01:36.81]And the graduation papers are nearly finished.
[01:41.67]They just need polishing and a printing of the final draft."
[01:46.95]A psychology professor gave a deeper expla-nation.
[01:53.11]"The four years at college are quite special and important to students.
[01:59.77]They study and live to-gether in these years.
[02:04.81]From the time when they gath-ered as freshmen at the very beginning,
[02:10.59]everything was new,and anything was possible.
[02:15.94]Now,it is end-ing,and they'll go their different ways.
[02:21.90]They know nothing about their future ex-cept one thing
[02:26.76]—that what is outside campus is different from their colleges or universities."
[02:33.70]"It is college life that teaches them to say goodbye to immaturity
[02:40.37]and makes them relatively indepent little by little.
[02:45.72]They treasure this period of time when they experience happiness,
[02:51.89]sadness,love,friendship,hopes and loneliness.
[02:57.48]When faced with its end,
[03:01.24]they find it difficult to accept the reality.
[03:05.89]So they dring,and even cry."
[03:09.94]Philip added,"Three years age,I was still a freshman.
[03:15.71]A senior in my depart-ment told me not to waste my time.
[03:21.27]His words are still ringing in my ears now.
[03:26.32]Looking back to the past years,I've no regrets from my four years.
[03:32.58]That's enough.
[03:35.82]Unfortunately,I've spent a lot of time in vain.
[03:40.79]Now it's time for me to warn others."
[03:45.15]David,a teacher from the university, said."This is understandable.
[03:52.88]After all,I was once a college student myself.
[03:58.32]However,I don't think it's good to drink and chat all day and night.
[04:05.37]These students' parents are paying for their education.
[04:10.54]To eat and drink as they do is a real waste.
[04:16.18]It's also bad for their health.
[04:19.94]They should find some better ways to enjoy their last moments at college."
